Need 308 exhaust ideas ?

There are some threads between here and the old FChat archives related to custom-fabricated exhausts with off-the-shelf mufflers and those that have them like the sound. Maybe a search on Dynomax or Flowmaster might get you there.

Magnaflow and Borla might be a better solution. I know Borla made a unit at one time for the 308. I am interested in one from them as well. Maybe we can get them to make a limited run of a couple

I'm in the process of doing this myself. The PO had removed the stock system and had 2 regular mufflers transversely welded in place of the stock unit.

Since that was the case I had ordered some flowmaster 40 series mufflers and was planning to modify/tap onto the exhaust pipes so that the flowmasters would run "straight" out the back with some tips (much like a dual exhaust on a corvette.) Anyway, it turns out the flowmasters wont fit.

I did a search in the tech section under flowmaster and then under magnaflow and it revealed a bunch of good threads.

My plan now is to use 2 magnaflow mufflers mounted transversely... there is a good pic and some info on how the owner did his mod in one of the threads...sorry I can't recall which one exactlly.

They were selling the unit for like $450 - $550 a few years back. You never know.

 

this dual flowmaster setup cost me about $500 at my muffler specialist. what a sound and the performance of a tru dual exhaust surely compliments the 308's (2 independant 4 cylinder design)...

Looks like a Euro back end. They don't have a heat shroud.

 

Your USA model is single-cat setup coming off the manifold, then from the cat it goes into a single muffler with dual outlets. That limits you somewhat.

 

I had a custom setup made at a local muffler shop. The cost was around $400 and it looks more like a Euro, I have removed the shield in the back.

Problem is though a V8 performs better (more HP) with a cross over pipe. Take a look at any of the good systems for American V8 cars and all the top ones have the cross over pipe. It has to do with the pulse rate.

 

Basically, the answer to your questions is...no.

Test pipe is it for you. If you want to stay compliant and enviromental, then just leave the car alone.

 

Hey there, I also changed the exhaust on my car, although I have a 78 GTS. The first time I did it, I just bought some "cherry bomb" mufflers and took out my old exhaust and cats and ran the mufflers transversly, the tips exited out near the same location of my stock exhaust. For fun, I just re-did them so that the tips exit in the middle of the rear end, kinda cool looking. The only draw back so far is that on the initial set up, it was really loud, and didn't sound all that great at low rpm, just off idle it was kinda VW like, not nearly as throaty as I'd hoped, but at high rpms, it sounded great. With the new set up, it is a little more quiet, and not nearly as cool sounding. The good thing is that I didn't spend really more than $100 getting the parts. Oh, one more thing, after the exhaust change, my car would pop big time on decelaration. With my new mods, this seems to have been cured with the addition of some back-pressure. This clip will give you some idea of the sound.

I recommend a tubi. It is the best purchase i have ever made. I would do it again in a heart beat, and it was a months wages for me. If I had a choice tubi or food, I'd pick the tubi!!!

Borla does not make them for the 308 anymore and would not when I asked about 7 or 8 years ago. They also have horrible customer service (ask and I'll give you the long version). And, they were about $1000 back then.

I ended up keeping my cats on (newer freer flowing) and just going with straight pipes from there to Ansa tips. The tips themselves have kind of a resonator in them. The exhaust is completely separate from bank to bank. I too have got some popping on decel. As for the crossover pipe, I've often wondered that myself. Though, with the flat cranks in our engines, I've heard that exhaust pulses are different. It is louder, but I wouldn't say it is obnoxious. The cats and tips muffle it somewhat. I also like more power, but enjoy breathing clean air too.

I heard somewhere that it may change the sound a bit when you remove those little inserts in the exhaust tips. I am not certain.

 

Drill a few holes in the muffler.

 

yes, my 308 is a euro - so the fit is probably better than the US. the sound is a bit throatier than stock, it has a scream above 5000 rpm. also, the flat crankshaft configuration does not require a crossover pipe as the pulse spacing is even across the board - unlike an american V8 that requires a crossover pipe......
