Back when Ferrari announced they were dropping the V12 from F1 and going with a V10, I heard that when ordering a 456 new from Ferrari, if you paid a bit extra (£12k springs to mind for some reason) they would fit a de-tuned F1 engine.

ISTR reading this in a couple of motoring magazines at the time.

    Truth, or urban legend?

    Cheers,
    TOM

truth all 12 cylinder engines are ex F1 racing development engines that is why they are so much better than the little 8 cylinder engines

hummm..its a completely different engine application, designed to rev to 20,000 rpm, small stroke, very little torque, pneumatic valvetrain etc. Ive never heard a 456 reving to 20,000 rpm in a tunnel :) Although that would be awesume :)

thats probably why the cossie DF8 was the most successful F1 engine of all time, they then put the extra V4 into a corsair!

I believe that in the case of the Testarossa it was derived directly from the previous years F1 race cars ;)
