    Hello fellow "F"-Chatters,

Well today was to be the big day:

I purchases some gaskets (from T. Rutlands) for the engine oil sump pan and trans sump pan.

I read all the archives that Mr. Magnusson sent me, no pardon me, I studied them!

Origionally I thought it to be simple, as I'm learing, nothing on my 79 308 is easy, Nothing!

After studying the atlernator R/R procedure, I was confident in the removal.

The pivot bolt remove will not remove since it strikes up against the dip stick tube. Hence the alternator will not remove. If I could have avoided removing the alternator, I would have since the revomal of the dipstick was my chief concern. I checked all the archives and didn't find the answer I was looking for. Please HELP!!!!!!!!

    Chris.

Either take the dipstick tube out or remove the alt mount bracket direct from the block.

Turn the pivot bolt around before refitting!

Patience is a virtue, and it will save your knuckles.

Yep, sounds like the bolt is in backwards.

I remember having to remove the alternator bracket from the block at this stage. This is also the point where you take your best 17 mm ring spanner and cut it in half. It is the only way to get to the bracket nuts. You can then put something long over the short spanner stub to remove the nuts.

If anyone asks you why you've got half a spanner skulling around in your tool kit, you can say its a ferrari thing. :)

Hey Guys, Thank you your input!

I'll approach the Alternator from the rear mounting brackets

Ham, thanks for the archived "Atlernator R/R procedure"

    Aprreciate it Guys, Chris.

That is the harder way in my opinion. The dip stick tube is although ackward is easier to remove IMO. The bolt is actually correctly fitted when it strikes the dip stick tube assembly, however I switched it around to make it easier next time. I am just curuious, I know the dip stick has to come out to change the oil pan but why are you removing the alternator? I found it near impossible to remove the braket with the alternator in place. Kind of a catch 22.

    Rob,

After a series of e-mails (via F-chat) I concluded that the Alternator was the best possible solution. Since I will no doubt be doing the cam belts, I thought it to killing 2-birds with one stone....

    Thanks for your inpute.

    Chris.
