Wonderful car! Congratulations and enjoy it in good health.
I had seen that particular 206 listed for sale at one point.
What is the history on the removable top?

I always wondered, how can one tell the 206 apart from the 246. I noticed the wheels are different. Any other visual differences? Thanks.

    Hi John,

There were a host of changes made over the production run of 206/246 Dinos, but to focus on exterior cosmetic changes only, here are the (somewhat) recognizable differences that I can think of:

    From 206 to 246 Tipo L:

    1. Wheelbase longer (looked it up; approximately 60mm)
    2. Front overhang longer (approximately 10mm)
    3. Rear overhang longer (approximately 20mm)
    4. Roof line taller (20mm)
    5. Fuel filler door added to hide previously exposed fuel filler cap

    From 246 Tipo L to 246 Tipo M:

    1. Knock-offs replaced by 5-lug bolt-on wheels
    2. Dual reverse lights replaced by single unit

    From 246 tipo M to 246 Tipo E:

US model introduced, as well as optional Campy wheels w/fender flairs, optional Daytona-style seats, GTS version, etc.

I think I also recall that the bumpers became heftier as some point. With the introduction of the E?

Naturally, all the ones Wayne cited are true.

Here's another which my friend Gary Shaw pointed out to me. On the 206, there are two rows of SIX vents on the engine cover. (See the last picture on my first post.) On the 246, there are two rows of SEVEN. (I couldn't quickly find a picture, but I'm sure there's one somewhere here.)

With all due respect to Wayne, this may be the simplest tip-off. It's harder to notice the dimensional differences unless you have the two cars together.

    Great car.
What's with the roof ?? It has the removeable section- but it's not a GTS??
Was this standard on 206's or is this a 'GTS' version ??

206 - license plate lights in the bumper, 246 they are in the trunk handle.

ANd I believe the seats had the headrests attached to the firewall. in the 246 that are on the seat itself.

is the external gas cap mounted on the left-side C-pillar as opposed to a flush-mounted flip-out cover panel.

No, there were no GTS versions of the 206, so this must be a conversion doen at some point later in it's life. Bobleb, any info on the GTS-style roof?

Yes, I forgot that one. Still, I think the fuel filler is easier to spot.

    Congratulations Bob,

That's a beautiful car. And very unique (206 with a targa roof). I'd love to hear the story behind that. Love the color, but then I'm biased.

    Welcome to the Dino club,

    Manny

Looking at any Dino seems to make me think mankind has taken a step backwards in car aesthetics. Yours is no exception. Thanks for sharing. I hope to find my dads someday.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words.

I am researching the history of the targa top. Unfortunately, some (totally unrelated) issues have intervened, so I may be slowed down of that. I'll report as soon as I learn something.

Dave (dm_n_stuff), I did send you a PM about the shift knob.
