I don't get it either. So what if there's a lot of Asians or Jews there? You don't like that? It's a negative thing? What are you saying? You said you didn't mean it...so what exactly did you mean? How can it be construed as anything but a rascist comment?

Show me what you meant, and how it was all innocent, and I will be the first to apologize. Until then, shame on you for expressing, or even harbouring such sentiments.

You now know that one slip of the tongue can undue years of good deeds.

Here on the internet, especially at FerrariChat, no bad act goes un-noticed, and no words can be un-spoken.

Apologies aside, I hope the lesson here is learned. Speaking out in a casual, off-handed manner can often lead to mis-interpretation, or worse yet, can reveal underlying prejudices that need to be addressed.

If you perceive Asians and Jews as being capable of "overruning" an institution, then you've got a ways to go before you can shed yourself of some deep prejudices. Even if spoken casually, it indicates that you have an issue with these folks.

Is the school you attend now "overrun" with Catholics? Is the college you are considering "overrun" with Caucasians?

Would having a Jewish or Asian roomate upset you? These are all things you have to think through and consider.

Do you see people as people, or are they defined by ethnicity or religion for you first? Answer carefully, be honest with yourself, and consider what the answer should be, as opposed to what your answer is.

Would it bother you to know that I have Jewish ancestry? Or that I have some Protestant Irish blood? How about German, or Italian? I have all of those in my background. Does that make me less of a person, or friend to you?

Grow some from this. Take the lesson and move on.

Oddly enough, lots of prejudices were present in my mind in high school. It was put on by the school itself. If you were seen hanging out with someone of a different race, you were 'red flagged' and called into the office quite often. Trust me, it did happen and not too long ago: 88-92 to be exact. While it wasn't entirely segregated, I would say, it was pretty close in some cases.

Then, years later, I moved away from parents, racist friends and opted for college at a university a few hours away. None of that crap mattered any more. Hopefully you'll have a similar experience no matter who you feel is running the show.

I will say this, in college, there was only prejudice against the Middle Eastern individuals at the school. But it isn't anything like you think. Most of them didn't speak English, didn't go to class and purchased their papers and grades. This was quite well known and wasn't just rumors. This was the nature of the school and how it survived financially at the time. It all comes down to - you only get out of school what you put into it. So, leave it be in that regard, no matter who you think is overrunning, or in my case, keeping the school afloat.

I shouldnt have said overrun, that was a bad choice of words. I admit that. I should have said that the student body is predominately jewish and asian. There is nothing wrong with that. when i say its not for me, im talking about both the size of the school and the whole ivy league image.

Dave, you are to good a mentor for me. People are people and i respect them all. I have no quams with anyone of a different race, religion, sex, orientation, or anything.

Patrick, hoped you learned your lesson but I know you didn't mean any harm with what you said. We ALL have said things in the past that could be seen as racist/sexist/etc to piss off someone and we were probably a lot older than Patrick....so lets cut the crap and stop pretending we are a bunch of saints, ok? It's not just people of certain races that we judge or stereotype....how about the disabled, the elderly, the poor, the overweight, etc. You question Patrick about what he meant by not wanting to go a certain school....well, before you bought your home, did you care about the neighborhood and the type/race of people that live nearby? If your son or daughter was dating someone of a different color/race or with a disability or was poor, would you have no problem with that? And God help any women with small boobs, as we can tell from the other thread that has been going on for over a week now. I guess it is so easy to forget that these people are human also. We all probably judge some people in some way...we just rather be hypocrites than to admit our faults.

As for the STFU remark, c'mon, the guy didn't deserve that reaction. He was just expressing his opinion, which is what everyone else here is doing. And no, I am not Jewish, but my best friend was, and I am sure he would agree with what i said if he was still here. So, let's all be friends..life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting, my friend (Figure I would end it with a Beatles lyric).

Since everyone is grilling you anyway… why bother mentioning Jews and Asians if you are concerned about the Ivy League Image… I mean the way you presented it you’d also object to UC Berkeley and UCLA.

Though judging from the comments of this thread the lesson you’re supposed to take away is ‘watch what you say, no matter how you feel’ which is probably true enough.

    Guys-

I understand the reaction to Patrick's post, but I simply think he meant that in a 'cultural' sense he wanted to keep his options open to something he was more familar with.. which may in fact be a more WASPy environment. Considering his age, I don't blame him for not wanting to thrust himself into the cultural melting pot- the prospect of going away to college is scary enough.

If this is the extent of his brutal honesty I think he's doing ok; are you denying that Jewish/Muslim/Buddist/Christian people like hanging out with those who share similar beliefs?

Personally, I'm tired of everyone throwing up red-flags anytime a difference in culture/religion/race brought up. We're all different, but we're all human. Let's make a nod to the difference, move on and learn from each other without passing judgment. I'm almost at the point that I honestly believe that if I say "Jewish people breath air" or "Black people pee" someone will file a knee-jerk lawsuit.

Unless someone says that a certain religion/race is wrong, below their own, and must go away.. it's their own cup of tea and boils down to personal preference. Are some colleges 'overrun' with certain types of people? YES. Are some parts of town? YES. As another member brought up, why do you live in one area and not another that's maybe more diverse?

Oh.. that's right, personal choice. We can still exercise that, I think.

I think Patrick's got the point, in certain situations you should always remember to be PC (politically correct) or else something you say/do will blow up in your face. I think we can stop berating this guy now.

    Quite simply, bullschit.

Your intent was plenty clear from your original phrasing :

You highlighted the fact that you thought the school was "overrun" (like some sort of roach infestation) with Asians and Jews, then with the next breath, declaimed "NOT FOR ME".

It is clear you viewed the ethnic/religious makeup of the school as a strong negative. That makes you a bigot. Bigot, bigot, bigot. No other way to say it.

What you're doing now after being called on it (THANKS BRUCIE, WHAT YOU DID SHOWS A NO-NONSENSE, HONEST ATTITUDE TO THIS SORT OF THING AND I RESPECT YOU FOR IT) is backtracking, and it's cowardly.

Be a bigot if you want to, but at least be a man about it.

You're overrun with stupidity. What does that make me?

If Patrick was black and said that he didn't want to attend a school for the same reason, would anyone dare create this thread? NOPE!

With short-sightedness like that it's almost no suprise why some people here type in caps.

It makes you an apologist moron who missed the point.

Easy with the shooting-from-the-hip there, Tex ! I, for one, WOULD "dare" create that thread. Racism is wrong, no matter who practises it. Don't make assumptions about my stand on the matter.

The caps were for the benefit of Bruce, who apparently has difficulty with his vision. Feeling good and clever about your little jibe now ?
