I don't see why everyone is so worked up about the possibility that Ferrari might make a less expensive car. At $160K it's still no BMW 3 series! You still won't be pulling up to many of them at a stop light. That's what a 360 cost in 1999.

As for WHY ON EARTH would Ferrari want to make more models and have a higher production? TO MAKE MONEY! The company exists to make a profit. They do not exist so that the board of directors can all brag that they work for Ferrari. The point is to make money. Having the demand outweigh the supply allows them to keeping charging a ridiculous amount of money for a car. But another business model would be to build more cars and make less profit per car, but still make more money overall.

I have long been of the opinion that Ferrari needs to get back to their roots and make a small, lightweight "Elise-like" mid-engined car with a small V-6 making around 300 HP and price it around $125K to compete with the 911. The F430 has become big and bloated. Not that I wouldn't want one, but it's no lightweight. Remember that the entire V-8 line originally evolved from the little 206 Dino.

I can agree with this only 'cause I would drop the 550/575 type cars and make the F430 the top 2 seater. This creates a cap for a real small Ferrari.

The bit that I disagree with is wanting to build a smaller car to compete with say Porsche, etc. That would be stupid of Ferrari as those highly competitive markets require way too much investment in R&D, etc. Thus Ferrari purposely puts itself apart from most of the rest to make MORE money per car.

This month's Road and Track magazine has a blurb on this new car. They say it may be called Dino or California. They are still saying it will be a front-mid engined V-8. I think it looks pretty good.

IMHO, the new 430 should be rebadged as a Dino since it has the mid-engined heritage of the original Dinos.
