Never let anyone drive your car if they can't afford to replace it.

For me I'm the only insured driver. If something were to happen when someone else was driving, guess who'd take the hit?
"... Just now he saw my Ferrari for the 1st time & asked to drive it in the same sentence where he asked me to dinner.”
Sounds to me like he was feeling you out to see how far you would let him go...I think that if you would have said "OK" to either of his questions he would have taken that to mean that you had a little crush on him too.

Seems to me that he probably does not care whether you say yes to a drive in the car or yes to dinner, he just wants to get you alone and away from his parents house!!!

Having a 20 year old kid drive your Ferrari is not a good idea. I am 20 and maybe some day I will drive one, but now is not a good time, and its not a good time for ANY 20 year old.

I'll give a ride to people I know that ask. The only person that has asked me to let him drive flew me in his Bonanza to the dealer when I baught my car. I don't think I'd let someone I didnt't know very well drive my 355

Banging your neighbor's 20 year old kid is probably not such a good idea, but a better idea than letting him drive your Ferrari or any of your cars for that matter.

I second Imoz' reply and also use the insurance angle to avoid the drive problem but you COULD be nice and just take him for a fang in it.

P.S. Rules for rides in my car are: girls just have to ask nicely (no, I'm not gay, I'd just like to see more girls seriously interested in cars), guys have to wash it first! Only reliable car club friends generally get to drive.

Tell him to come back when he is a man.

If he relents tell him you'll tell his parents that he was hitting on you. ;)

I don't have a Ferrari, but this issue has come up with my Typhoon. It is a highly modified, race-built Typhoon, so it's not exactly the same as driving a regular street car. When someone asks to drive it, I think that's a little rude unless I know them very well, though I do happily give out rides. I have only offered to let one person drive the Ty, and he declined (whew). He had let me drive his '95 Supra TT just prior (he offered, I didn't ask).

Something that just occurred to me... I don't know if you track your car, but if you do, maybe invite your neighbor to go to a track day with you and give him a ride on track? Sufficiently platonic and you get a pit crew for the day ;-)

I haven't had this problem (yet). Most of the friends that I know are just as happy with me taking them for a spin around the block then asking to drive it. Some people have no respect and will just come out and ask such a dumb question. My guess is that this guy also asks women their ages and weight...
It's the people that would be just as happy sitting in the passenger seat that you need to keep around.... The others can just F.O....

Tim, can you post some pics of your Ty down in the Cars& Motorcycles section? I'm a big Sy/Ty fan, I have a client and another good friend that own them. I'm curious to hear more about your modifications, but I don't want to hijack this thread.

No drivers, whether they ask or not. I agree, it's rude to ask. I've only let one other person beside shop and state inspection people drive and that was a guy who was interested in finding a 330 2+2 and came far out of his way on a vacation to see mine -- he'd never seen one before and was very nice so I offered him a drive.

Questions are always gladly answered and impromptu BS sessions are fine if time permits. Those that show a sincere interest get a ride, as do friends' kids.

No one has asked to drive just out of the blue yet, in going on three years ownership. To requests, my standard reply would be that my insurance doesn't allow it.

It is indeed rude to ask, and although not a Ferrari, I just laugh ... they've been rude enough to ask, they can take some f*ck off heat.
BTW, the only people who have asked this were people I didn't care about ...

My 20 year old son asked "When can i drive it?"

I immediately said, "When Pigs Fly". He had a little problem with his license.

On a more serious note, if a friend asks AND you know them to be a good driver, Give him/her a short ride to a nice bit of driving road. On the way, demonstrate carefull shifts, moderate rpm, not 10/10ths driving.

If you have any doubts, tell them you have special insurance for the Ferrari that prohibits other drivers. Obviously, this will not go over real big if the dweeb knows that so and so drive your car.

I offered to let my 20 something nephew drive mine for an hour out in the Cascade foothills while I was in the passenger seat. I don't think I have ever seen a car shifted so carefully. He wasn't used to the "backwards' shift pattern and gates. He was below the insurance age but I let him anyway.

I also offered to let my brother drive it as well with me riding along. I know he understands machinery and will respect it. I told him to get on it and throw it through some corners. Quite fun to observe and listen to your own car without being distracted by driving it.

Me and my friend decided to trade Ferraris at his suggestion because he wanted to hear what his Testarossa sounded like with the new Tubi he installed. I couldn't argue with that so as we are driving down the freeway, he in the 308 with the top off, I drop back a couple hundred yards, drop it down two gears and nailed it, shifting at 6,000 RPMs through the gears, blowing by him and continuing on away under full song. Afterwards he gave the thumbs up and said it was AWESOME!!!!.

I think the point to my drabble is nobody has really asked me to drive my 308 but I am usually the one to suggest it and only to those people that I know will be careful and show respect for the car........................ALWAYS with me in the passengers seat!

    Karen,

Definitely sounds like this kid is hitting on you big-time. "Oh, let me drive your car and I'll buy you dinner." Yeah, right. You being the extremely attractive and incredibly toned woman you are, I'm sure this young guy is just dying to put the moves on you. Seems very transparent. So, it's simple -- Just say no, unless you really feel otherwise.

So, now that he's out of the picture, can I ask you something? How about letting me drive your car? If you let me drive your car, I'll buy you dinner. ;-)
