if anyone went by Ferrari of Silicon Valley in Redwood City today and wondered where the F50 GT1 went, I can tell you. it was in palo alto, being dyno'ed.

i have an internship at a small hot rod shop next to a garage that tunes german cars (mostly porshces and volkswagens). when i arrived, the gate was closed but not locked, and there was a palo alto police suburban there. i entered the gate, and what did i see sitting on the euro shop's dyno but the F50 GT1 with the rear clamshell open! i was completely in awe. i got to work in the other shop with the promise of going back over when the engine fired up. sure enough, about 15-20 minutes later, Braaaa-a-p-p-p-p-p-p-p. what a sound. i called up my friend jack (known as crackajack on the forums) and let him listen to the noise of the F50 GT1 idle. mind you, there was very little talking, partially due to the awe on both sides, and partially because even at idle the GT1 was so loud that i could barely hear him. it was about as loud as any street car i have ever heard AT REDLINE. now all that makes sense; it is a race car after all. it sat idling for about five minutes, with the occasional poke of the throttle. i went back to helping my employer install the A/C unit in his '57 Bel Air, and returned to the GT1 at the speed of light when i heard the engine slowly climbing up to (i would guess) about 6000 rpm. that went a few times, then came the real fury. the wail all the way up to quintuple digits was seriously deafening, but i didnt bother to plug my ears because that only deadens the sweet sound. i was about ten feet away from the #1 F50 GT1 as it went full throttle all the way up to redline. at this point, i was completely in awe. completely. i stood paralyzed and deaf staring at the car, and the luckiest man on the face of the earth, the man at the wheel (not Art, he was nowhere to be seen). i was one of only seven or eight people there to whitness this. and i'll never forget it.

unfortunately, this caught me completely off guard, and i didnt have a camera or anything. however, two of the people there did; one a TV-quality camera, and one just a hand-heald one. i'm going back again tomorrow, and i'm bringing a camera (just in case).

They aren't really dynoing it for the power reading - the F50 and 550 on that dyno both had trouble with the inductive tach lead and couldn't get accurate readings (Ferrari ignition wires have some crazy ignition wires) - bu that's not the main reason the power wasn't the main focus point.

I wasn't there for this car, got to see Dan's car on the dyno and the standard run-of-the mill F50 a while ago (yah know, not a GT ;) ).

Poor quality video of the F50 (not the GT):

Good to see that Mark and co got the car there for audio. Streetwerks must've been pleased.

Is that a stock or aftermarket exhaust on the F50?

    alright.

got back from the shop, and i caught the f50 gt1 three times on the dyno. i'm going to finish editing and such, then post it online. should be up within a few hours!

btw, the reason the f50 gt1 is there is not b/c of igniton wires.

I didn't say it was, I said that's the reason they couldn't get accurate tach readings, and therefore couldn't get accurate power readings. Oh, and do keep the real reason it was there confidential...

Also, you are nuts for standing behind it without ear plugs! :0

well well well, the time has come. here's the first video of the Ferrari F50 GT1 on the dyno. this is the short and sweet version, and it's about 1.8 megs or so. tomorrow i'll put up another video with all three dyno runs, and some static shots. enjoy!

by the way, they weren't there to measure the horsepower, so the stats at the end are just the "official" ferrari stats. the sound isnt the best (it's a handheld camera), but it will give you an idea of kind of what it was like if you crank your speakers up to full blast a few times over.

how did people get pics of this? there were only like eight people there!

    Sweet video!

As for other people getting pictures- it's a very rare car, it's SoCal, and there are 15k+ people on this board. I'm suprised there aren't more!

Anyone know if the car might be headed back to the Ferrari showroom? I didn't get a chance to get up and see it there yet, but I might be free next weekend.

Also, a HUGE THANKS to everyone who shared/help share this content. I'm in awe myself - wonderful to see and listen to.
