I was born in an Italian-speaking family, and there is no english pronunciation that I can think of that comes close. You just have to hear it from someone who knows the correct pronunciation. And, generally speaking, the next-to-last syllable is usually stressed in most Italian words.
Just saw a thread and NNO commented on the pronunciation of the word Modena. I'd be interested to see how people pronounce it, as I didnt agree with what NNO said (sorry Bud) - I think its a US/Europe thing as my American mates opt for 1, I go for 2. I cant work out how to do a poll, but here's obvious choices..... 1) Mo-dee-nah 2) Mod-en-ah 3) Other Jamie
OK, sincere apologies, I await the public stoning for not searching first. Mods, PLEASE DELETE THIS THREAD. Thx Jamie
Just got back from Modena in April where they pronounce it as MOH DEN AH The accent is on the hard "O" of MOH.... Technically is should be MOH DANE AH, but when you say it fast, the "e" is more like a soft English "e". Traditionally, the Italian "e" is prounced like a hard "a" Just sort of slur your way over the "DANE" portion of the above. It will be accurate then.
I'm not even reading 90% of the replies to this thread and probably 10% of the people reading this thread will read my reply but here's how i pronounce them Moe-DAY-Na Guy-ARE-doh Mur-see-a-LA-go
Heh, ask people from Maine, Minnesota, Texas, Tennessee, and Looziana how to pronounce New Orleans. Then explain to us which is "correct". BTW, way to go unearthing a 4 year old thread as your first post! Jeff
