It's going to be a very fun weekend!

For those of you who like FINE WINE, there will be some VERY VERY SPECIAL wine tastings being put on for us by two of the state's most prestigious wineries (it's a surprise).

Trust me.... it will be fantastic!

Like anyone will be looking, but there are some kewl things to see in the gorge. Such as Indian Rock, as you are heading west you can see a profile of and old indian chief, i think it is across the river from Mitchel Point. I like to point out the old lumber flume ( sp), I was told it was the longest one in the world, it was featured on one of the disney movies or lassie series, one with a cougar chasing timmy down the flume, they both rode logs.

I think it use to run about 25 miles and ended in White Salmon?

Several places to see the reminants of the ORegon Trail i.e. when you are on I-84 heading west at mile post 100 ( deschutes river crossing) look up at the hill as you are on the bridge( about 11 o'clock) for several ditches, it is my understanding form ole timers in the area that when the ruts got too deep they moved the trail several yards and you can see at least three eroision ditches that curve as they run down the hill side.

Beacon rock I have been told is the second largest single rock in the world right behind Gilbralter.

I really like taking folks to Stone Henge as well, WWI memorial built by Sam Hill ( from the saying "where in the Sam Hill") builder of the Columbia Gorge Highway, friend of the Queen of Romania hence all the Romainian stuff in his Mary Hill Museum.

In case anyone is bored please read this great old story, other wise skip ahead! or skip this whole post as I tend to go off!
My great aunt used to run sheep from her place in Klondike (Sherman co.) to the flanks of
Mt Adams across the columbia. There were only ferries at the time and she had a great sheep dog to help. They would go over for a couple of months. I think it would be about 60 miles one way. One year the dog didn't feel like staying in Klickitat county and went home to Sherman county by himself. My dad tells it much better, but one can only imagine the look on the ferrie captians face when he sees this sheep dog all by himself waiting to get on the ferrie to go back home!

At about mile post 103 or 102 on I-84 you can see what looks to be like a man made on ramp to a freeway cut out of the basalt. This is where the wagons went from the top of the hill down to river level to cross the deschutes. There is a small white post ( OR Trail marker) next to the road on the old highway parallel to 84 at this site.

When built the train bridge at Celilo was entirely on rock. And you can still see the swivel protion ( not in use now using a lift section ) which is the end of the 14 mile canal that enable boats to get around Celio Falls, the other end is still visable as part of The Dalles Dam.

In the winters prior to the dams folks would drive across the columbia when frozen.

About two years ago the only private island with a home in the gorge sold for 2M.

The largest building move in Oregon History was when they moved the grain elevator at Biggs from the edge of the river to its current location several hundred yards south, from one side of the freeway to the other, due to rise in water level from The Dalles Dam. Now there is a white tank stye elevator in is old location.

Sorry for the long post! Hope you guys have fun, stay safe!

I drove along highway 14 in the WA side a couple months ago...there was an interesting museum in Stevenson (I think that was the location), and if you do stop at Maryhill, check out the peacocks roaming the grounds, huge, and very noisy!

    Movin’ to the country,
Gonna eat a lot of peaches
    Movin’ to the country,
Gonna eat me a lot of peaches
    Movin’ to the country,
Gonna eat a lot of peaches
    Movin’ to the country,
Gonna eat a lot of peaches

    Peaches come from a can,
They were put there by a man
    In a factory downtown
If I had my little way,
    I’d eat peaches every day
    Sun-soakin’ bulges in the shade

Take a little naps where the roots all twist
Squished a rotten peach in my fist
    And dreamed about you, woman,
I poked my finger down inside
Make a little room for it to hide
Nature’s candy in my hand or can or a pie

Millions of peaches, peaches for me
Millions of peaches, peaches for free

    Look out!

"Peaches," by The Presidents of the United States (a Seattle band).

Are they really from Seattle? Wow! I've enjoyed listening to them since their first album in 1995. I thought they were from the South because of the "Peaches" song. So, on these lyrics:

    "I'd use any trick
Just to spend my loose change
On a fist sized ice-cream cone at Dick's"

Are they referring to Dick's hamburger joint on Lake City Way?
