After i graduated from USD law school, I gave a speech to some of the kids who were from Sacramento and going to USD for college, and the one lesson both a frient and I told them was that as soon as they left the US, despite the festive atmosphere and the relaxed view towards drinking in Tijuana, that they had to be very aware of the fact that they would be in a foreign country with very different laws and levels of enforcement than the US. I told them that if they ever found themselves under arrest that, assuming they were given a phone call which was not required, that they shouldn't call mommy or daddy or their friends back in SD, but they should call the American Consulate so they could get proper legal representation. I even had one kid tell me that it was no problem, that he would pay off the cops, so I figured it would be about 2 hours before he got himself in trouble.

These kids don't seem to care that they are not afforded the same rights as in the US, and God forbid something should go wrong, it will be much more difficult to deal with in a foreign land. I'm not saying that this girl deserved to be murdered or anything like that, but being young and in a foreign place affords you no more right to act foolishly than if you were at home.

I think she was taken to the beach, gang raped, since she was so drunk as reported, she may have died from alcohol poisoning or something, and the father helped dispose of the body.

Arlie, you continue to prove you're an imbecile. No wonder you don't have sires. If you ever have a child, or a family member lost thru crime, random violence, or illness, you may understand. Until then, grow the fnck up.

And you continue to prove that some people just can't handle the cold hard truth. If you act irresponsibly, especially in a third world country, you stand a good chance of getting "bit". Just like some Walter Mitty type who buys a Ferrari and wraps it around a tree. Eighteen may have been the legal drinking age in Aruba, but she was doing something that she could NOT legally have done in most states here in America.

By the way, ignore reality and park your shiny Ferrari on the sleazy side of town and don't act surprised when it disappears. It may be your LEGAL right to expect somebody NOT to steal it, but the real world is cold and cruel. Take the same precautions with your own well being as you do with your possessions.

It's like those scantily dressed women who walk into a bar full of desperate dudes. And then they act surprised when they get raped in the alley behind the bar. Do they really feel better when they are crying on Gloria Allred's shoulder because legally speaking, they should NOT have been attacked?

Oh, by the way, a friend of mine, his wife and daughter, and a few others are flying to Aruba THIS FRIDAY MORNING. So the situation is indeed pertinant.

Ok, it's really sad she's gone and all.

But don't we (and by 'we' I mean 'The Tabloids') only care about her because she's a cute little blonde?

I don't know where she comes from, nor does it matter. If she's cute, did she "ASK" for it??? If idiot's presumption is true, then if it happened when she was of legal drinking age in her hometown, it's OK?
If it was a young boy, would it be "seedier?"
Perhaps if she had less teeth?
Christ. Someone lost a LIFE, for no reason. Just like people who die daily in Iraq who aren't US forces or terrorist focks...nobody gives a damn.
Please. Ben, I hope you know better.

I think it should be noted since this is going off topic, that her mother was (rightfully) b!tching and moaning the first couple days she was missing and no one reported it. She is not front page ONLY becuase she is blond and white, as some network did a story on as well, but since her parents made a point to get her name in the networks to help with the search. Did it work? Yes, the Gov't down there then took a different stance.

And to say that Auruba is a thrid world country?
Acoording to the HDI, the only way they could be considered a 3rd world country is due to their GDP, which dropped 1% in 2002, due the aftermaths of some 9/11.

Back to the INTENT of this thread, How strange is this case, media out of it, moving along? Ever play that game Clue? I know her life is not a Clue game board, but you ever fell like it really wasn't Colonel Mustard in the Conservatory with the Wrench? That was the INTENT of this thread.

Not OK, never. Just, well, common. Maybe hardly newsworthy as sad as that is. (at least as far as I know from the story.)

It disgusts me that the tabloids slather about little JonBinette Ramsey, and if she didn't look like a little baby doll, she'd just have been one more faceless trajedy.

It is the Media's very PREMISE that you have to be cute, blonde, blue-eyed, Apple Pie or otherwise something middle america holds dear, in order to be missed.

I agree with that... I doubt that this was murder.. it was probably an accident (OD or something like that).. Kid panicks and starts recruiting folks for help.. Dad is a judge with plenty of contacts and knows how to cover up...

Agreed, all I can say is put yourself in her Mothers shoes, kinda scary. And kudos to her for fighting so hard, reminds me of my mother, that woman would never leave one of hers in harms way even if she had to die trying.

And some interesting facts there about 3rd world countries.

Everybody is bemoaning the fact that the media is giving this story extensive coverage because the victim was a young, blonde, beautiful girl. DUHHH!!! Isn't that the very reason that she became a victim? Criminal dudes don't usually prowl the bars looking for OLD, GRAY HAIRED, UGLY girls now, DO THEY???

How many little old ladies did Ted Bundy murder? When Richard Speck murdered those 8 student nurses back in Chicago in 1968, those girls weren't senior citizens were they? Did the Green River killer murder old men down at the retirement home? No, he murdered dozens of young girls.

Get off the politically correct bandwagon and wake up and smell the coffee.

Ok, so we all know that. Whats your point? We are not adressing it, since its not the topic here. The topic here is wtf happened that night.

Start a thread about the media and the topic you mentioned. You should be a leading authority on that.(no sarcasm at all)

Arlie, you're completely off the mark here (as usual). This has nothing to do with her being young and blonde, it has to do with a person disappearing in another country and a possible cover-up by a judge in that country, i.e. obstructing justice.

While I understand your view of a young blonde being a potential victim everywhere she goes, I refuse to simply accept it and move on. Are you implying that the beautiful people deserved to be killed?

As if to say if your a good looking girl, don't go to a bar? I understand your point about 'having great power requires great responsibility'....and being a young, good looking female is power....desire is power....but you have to live your life to. Your comment about 'taking your Ferrari to the other side of town and see if it gets stolen'....your Ferrari can get stolen anyway, does that mean you don't drive...some people are very careful with their Ferrari's...and they still get stolen...that is not their fault! I'm sure in that situation, your excuse would be "well, if you didn't want the attention, you should have bought a Honda"...people with your thought processes will always find an excuse on why the victim is to blame.

And thats not right....not all victims are to blame...if this girl was 22, the same thing could have happened so I don't buy your arguement of underage drinking was one of the culprits.

And I don't think your analogy of 'parking a Ferrari in the worst place in town to see if gets stolen' is on line with this situation...She wasn't 'hitchhiking down the street to find the most dangerous person she could find'...she met the guy in a casino and he WAS WITH HIS DAD, WHO WAS A JUDGE IN TOWN...Thats a pretty prominent figure on that island. Maybe she wouldn't go to the beach with just anyone, but maybe because of the circumstances that arose, she felt it was a 'safe' desicion...

Let's try to make aware that the world is unsafe place, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't LIVE your life for fear of something happening...And let's also place blame on the guilty party, not the person who 'could have avoided it had they made another desicion'....hindsight is 20/20....im sure you have made decisions that you regret or realize are wrong later, but didn't realize it at the time. Either that, or you are the PERFECT PERSON, if which that is the case...preach away...

You PC types know good and well that girl wasn't hanging out at the island bars a 1AM in the morning because she was looking for the local Bible study class or a meeting of the island's library club. Like any hot young babe, she was looking for the BOOZE and the GUYS. If some other local guy had approached her and said "Hey beautiful American girl, want to sit down with me in the local church and discuss the beautiful flowers and wildlife that grows on our island?, she would have laughed in his face. Young babes want one thing: ACTION. (in whatever multiple forms that may take.)

Like a dog chasing a car, sometimes one actually catches what you're chasing. And sometimes it's like catching a rabid wolverine: Once you catch it, you can't let go or get away. Sounds like she found action that night. But wasn't that what she was looking for? Otherwise, she WOULD have been attending the local church services.

So you therefore equate that a young girl is just as likely to get into trouble at a nice restaurant, chuch picnic, or library club meeting as she is at a bar at 1 o'clock in the morning?

Oh man, I'm really rolling on the floor laughing at that politically correct hogwash.

When you wake up and smell the coffee, make sure it isn't decaff.

just because she wants action, wants to make out or **** a guy or just mess around, that doesn't mean she deserves to be raped and murdered or whatever happened
