Incredible drawing, and I'm going to sound like a horse's rear end by saying this, but I'm a stickler for WWII accuracy.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but:
The pilot looks to be wearing a "hard" helmet, like a crash helmet worn by many modern fighter pilots. But this type of helmet was not in existance during WWII. They wore leather headgear with the headphones enclosed in the leather surrounding the ears. B-17 pilots and crew wore the same type of head gear, but also had flak helmets in case things got rough. (Check out the documentary "Memphis Belle" filmed during actual combat.) The crew was wearing flak helmets in some scenes, but they weren't modern crash helmets.

OK, my flame suit is on. Let me have it with a 1919A4.

    Good eye Arlie,
The reproduction of that picture to this site is poor. He did a scan of it and sent it to me and I ran it through my photo program before posting to Fchat so the values are all out of wack. The highlighting he used was to emphisize the harshness of the sunlight at that altitude also.

I have seen the original drawing and the helmet is exactly as you describe. He had one just like it when he was in the Army Aircorps.

My dad is the type that is also a stickler for detail which makes his production slow and ardurous (sp?). I have seen him count rivet heads and cooling fins from photographs to insure accurancy. More patience than I have for sure.

He just gave me an original 3' X 4' pencil drawing of two F104 Starfighters in flight that I will cherish. My favorite "suck and blow" Century Fighter.

Ahhh, the F-104. Isn't that the one that Chuck Yeager nearly bought the farm in? And didn't the F-104 hold the altitude record for many years? (It took off under its own power, reached the highest altitude, and landed safely.) Something like 120,000 feet? (The X-15 went much higher, but it didn't take off from the ground by itself. It was dropped from a B-52.)

Ha! I think he almost checked out in a couple of different planes during test flights.

The F104 wasn't much more than a manned guided missle with wings. Talk about power to weight ratio!

Here is a shot with my point-and-shoot. Much better in person.

Very nice! Now can you throw in a shot of MY personal favorite, the X-3?
It too was a manned missle with wings, but from what I've read, very underpowered and never lived up to it's potential. But somewhere in storage I have 2 models of it.

It seems under powered A/P's were the order of the day. The engine technology just wasn't there yet. The F-102 comes to mind.

I'll have to Google an X3.

Brings back fond memories of getting "wrung out" by a friend of my dads. Too young to be scared at the time. Never got sick wither. Better than an E ticket at Dizzneeland.

The Cascade Warbirds aren't going to show up at the Arlington Flying this year. Too bad. It's the only reason I go.

Paul Allen will be opening up his "secret" museum to show off his collection of WWI and WWII aircraft. Might go to see that. Not much fun if they don't fire them up and make noise and smoke!

To bad about no war birds. Seems to me that an airshow without them just aint an airshow. Just like the air races....take away the thunder machines and there wouldnt be much of a crowd. I understand Allen has quite a stable. Nice to look at but mo betta flying. Static displays just dont do it for me....be sortta like sitting in an Enzo and not being able to drive it.

I have heard that the war birds don't get treated very well by Arlington. No perks or fuel. Attendence is all voluntary. Too bad.

Here is a list of the A/P's that Paul Allen will have on display. Not all are restored. All restorations are to flying condition which is a good thing though. Too bad none will fly this weekend. I just love the Russion stuff. No other sound like 'em!

    Sparky,

Been reading this thread for awhile. I'm a pilot and aviation nut...and of course a Ferrari lover (own a little 308). Anyway, had a chance to fly in a Mustang "Old Boy" a few years back. Incredible. Definitely one of my dreams to own a Mustang one day. Just in case you're interested, I bought a plastic, pre-built model of the P-51 this weekend. It's 1:18 scale (roughly 2' wingspan) and extemely well detailed...from the Elite Force collection. I have it hanging next to a painting of a Mustang in my house and pictures of me from my flight. If you're in to that type of thing, you might check it out. $40 at Toys R Us or you can buy it online. Nice plane and car. Congrats.

Sorry about not getting back...been busy. I cant think who owns Old Boy, but I assume it was a good ride. How could a ride in a Mustang be anything but. How long have you been flying and what do u fly? How long have u had the 308? ---seems like a lot of HOWS. What year and color? Now I'm starting with the WHATS. Thanks for the heads up on the lg scale 51's...have to check those out. Thanks for the chat....SS

Oh well, at least you get to go in the Bee-mer. Wonder how far of a drive it would be from here to there as the crow does not fly? Perhaps next year? Is there a door prize for furthest driven or droven or to whomever drives the furthest? I gotta get a job or somethin.

    Sparky,

Thanks for writing back. I've attached some photos of the Mustang model as well as a photo of a photo of me sitting in Old Boy after my flight. I've also included a picture of my shirt-tail from my first solo flight back in 1996 and a picture of my 308 (Nero metalico, 1985). Steve Collins from Atlanta used to own Old Boy. It was previosly owned by IBM CEO, Tom Watson. She's now for sale through Courtesy Aircraft. Check out their website at www.courtesyaircraft.com. I only fly single engine land (I guess a -51 would qualify!!) but more along the cessna lines! Oh, well. My dad is a pilot for Delta and lives on a little runway outside of Atlanta. He's restoring a 1941 Stinson 10A and is working on a few Pietenpol Aircampers. We love all of the EAA stuff. Anyway, that's a beautiful Mustang you have there!

Hi Stephen. Have several buds were Western Airline retreads in the 80's that went over to Delta. Ask your dad if he knows John Harrison. John tought me to fly formation the Air Force way when we both had T-6's in the early 80's. Made several X-countrys to Oshkosh togheher and what fun we had. The best flying ever. 30 hrs in 2 weeks and lots of low-level junk in the mid west. Have a few hrs in a 108 but with a 180hp lyc rather than the old Franklin. Never been around an Air-camper as I much prefer a heaver military aircraft. Pix out of Harrisons slug next to the Grand Teton in Jackson Hole, Wyo. circa 1981. Just about 13,000 ft on our way to Rapid City. Fun stuff. Fly safe..SS

    Sparky,

Any chance in hell you can come up for the airshow in Montana? I'm flying in 29 Jul 05 and leaving 1 Aug 05. It's cool for me since it's my home town and both of my brother's have flown in for previous airshows (F-16 and F/A-18). Here's the web-site. Free room and board (very, very good board)....

P.S. I'm the AH-6410! I have no idea from where the "10" came!
