Anyone know what the coating material(s) is on the outside of the tank? It appears to be some sort of insulation (asbestos?) oversprayed with silver paint. I'm cleaning my tanks, and no doubt much of this coating will fall off in the process as some of it is flaking off on its own. I want to be able to duplicate it (or use something better) when I re-prepare the tanks. Anyone ever done this type of restoration before???

I had a leak fixed on one of my tanks. I took it to a professional rebuider and they sandblasted the entire tank and welded the hole. Then it was coated with a "rubber" compound and put in an oven. I was told it could be painted but when I applied the metalic aluminum paint it never dried. That was a year ago and it still is soft! They said they've never seen anything like it. Now I have a smooth gas tank and it's full of fingerprints!

A very good approximation to the tank finish is to spray with a coarse textured rocker schutz (rocker panel chip guard), then spray with Al paint.

It's as close you're going to get to the OEM finish.

I used a professional undercoating on the areas that were lacking.
Then when dry I painted with Aluminum color paint.
    Not to bad looking!

We spray an aresol bedliner product to give a textured finish on some of the parts we are restoring. The 2 part stuff is far superior though.

Thanks all, for your offerings ---- the part that has me concerned though is not the "look" but, rather a way to regenerate the original (or better) thermal barrier. Wrapping with heat shield fabric would work, but I'd rather apply a paintable coating ---- matching color and texture would be a nice bonus...

When I repainted my tanks I used the silver metal impregnated rust proofing paint from POR15. The silver seamed to match the rest of the engine compartment pretty well. It is also some pretty tuff stuff. Do not let the used paint brush sit on the work bench (required a hammer and chisel to remove).
