A question of style for the 308 gt4...

I just freed my '75 308 gt4 from its thermoreactor exhaust and installed a period Euro ANSA exhaust that I bought from a fellow F-chatter. (Hey Don, it bolted on easily--just had to drill a couple new holes to get the "springs" to line up. Of course, getting the old exhaust off was paaaaaaaainful.)

Anyway, here's the question for all you gt4 experts:

Now that I have the streamline ANSA exhaust on, I'm wondering if I should ditch the "basket" on the rear. The basket has always looked like an "add-on" from a design point of view. And now it really isn't necessary from a functional point of view.

So...should I ditch the basket??? Opinions please...

My first car, a 77 B, carried a Tubi without the basket. Take a look at the photo. Ultimately, the decision will be yours regardless of what you read here. My only suggestion is to keep the basket so you can install it if you ever decide to show or sell. JMO.

i would ditch the basket. i removed mine from the GTB and the GT4 didnt have it when i purchased it.

If you ditch it I would be interested in it I have a few friends without them who want one, Is it in good condition?

 

It is in good condition, but even if I leave it off I'll probably keep it.

I think I'll live with it off for a while and see how I like it.

 

Form follows function on great cars. I doubt a GT4's value will suffer anytime soon from lack of it and if it doesn't do anything I say ditch it.

It must be me, but I can't really see the exhaust in either of the two pic's very well. I am curious about the de-catted euro exhaust for mine though.

I must admit I was trying to get you to sell it to me as the are very rare! I think it looks much better with it to be honest and maybe you just need a tubi!!?? many gt4's have lost them so I would keep it as it is way cooler than than later lovered version IMHO. I say keep it original is cool modified is well jsut modified but its your car.....

I would keep it. Without the basket the nice tail pipes become less "visible".
Decide whether the visual focus should be on the muffler or on the tail pipes.
Just my opinion.

The appearance is a personal preferenece IMO. I don't like the look of the 'diaper' on US cars. My GT4 is a Euro, it came with a GTB muffler. It now has the correct muffler again.
I did this purely because it looks correct. As a bonus, it sounds better as well. Somewhat throatier.

I think history will be much kinder to the GT4 than the general opinion of the last 2 decades. I know I like them better every time I see one!

You're right. I never liked them...until I saw one up close. Now I want it to be my 2nd Ferrari.

 

I really think the GT/4's are becoming more popular as time go's on. They are an absolute blast to drive, and for now a great bargin. But I don't think that they will be for too much longer, the really nice ones are being snatched up quickly. And so it goes they are getting harder to find. Don't wait too long!

Here's my "naked" Borla exhaust. They're a pretty mean pair of pipes sticking out back there and I don't know how many times I've burnt my chins, or got soot on my pants from them! But I wouldn't trade it for anything else, the sound is spine-tingling.

By-the-way, the only cover I have is that simple bent piece of perforated sheet-metal that the previous owner's mechanic installed when the Borla went on. The mechanic made it. I kind-of wished he made it a bit wider so it would span the width of the cut-out, but I'll keep it. For now at least.
