    F1Ace: Look for a couple of Mountains called "The Twin Sisters" in the Montana area. I have heard that the two mountains have some very curvy roads.

    Some other roads I have been on:

    Rte 74 from Asheville NC to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock State Park. Then head back north on Rte 74 to Rte 9 and take a right (north) to I-40 which the road is nice and curvy. One of the frequent F-chatters told me that route a while back.


    Bald River falls road. It is just off the main road of the Cherohala Skyway about 3 miles from Tellico Plains. The road is around 18 miles long which is paved all the way. It is a beautiful road which winds next to the river and it dead ends to a OHV Trail where Jeeps, 4 wheelers and dirtbikes roam.
    The road will cross over a bridge to Bald River Falls which to your right is the falls. One of the closest Falls that you can get to and its pretty big. Once you get past the falls there seems to be NO traffic whatsoever. My cousin who teaches the State troopers in Nashville TN told me about that road but just in case be careful as always on any road you are on. That is one of my Secret roads ;)

    Can someone clear up one thing for me?

    When I was in LA a few years ago I thought I understood a sign on an on-ramp to the freeway indicating motorcycles were not allowed onto the freeways, is this technically correct?

    I don't think there is any restrictions on motorcyclists being on freeways- the sign you saw may have been refering to "cycles", as in bicycles. There are some streches along the 101 where it's ok to ride your bike on the side of the freeway as it is the only way to get from point A to B. They also put up signs telling you were this is not allowed.

    I really don't think so. I read it a number of times while I was there and it seemed to specifically mention 'motorized' cycles. I kinda thought it made sense in a way, 'cause if a bike wiped out on some of those freeways it would sure be a slaughter. Still, I wondered how you could get around if you had to stay off the freeways.

    Has anyone else seen this sign?

    Anything in the Rocky Mts. qualifies for an excellent road IMO.

    Highway 32 in Missouri between Lynchburg and where it ends in Iron County, about 100 miles south of St. Louis. Approximately 90 miles long, there are only two towns with a stoplight in that stretch, Licking (insert joke here) and Salem.

    Most of it is through the Mark Twain National Forest, so very few houses or turnoffs along the way. Little traffic, last time I rode it on a Friday evening I only had to pass two or three cars. far off the major interstates, H.P. are also scarce as well.

    While not especially tight (a few 40 mph corners), there are constant elevation changes and many fast sweepers. That area has rolling hills and miles of forest.

    DFW area:

    Drive time can be as short as 30mins to 2 hrs + depending on what route you take and if you stop for food.

    New Hope Road ( 1827 )
    Speed(s): 30-45mph
    Police: Limited I have not seen any in the past 3 years

    CR545 East or West
    Speed(s) 30-45mph
    Police: Limited - Ditto above

    981 East ( if you went East above )
    Speed(s) 30-45mph
    Police: Limited Ditto above

    455 West to I35 ( if you went West off 545 )
    Speed(s) 30-50mph
    Police - rare - though they may sit at the end of a straight away and take pictures. No tickets on any of the drives in the past 4 years. ( knock on wood )

    CR697 from Whitewright towards Sherman ( if you took the 981 route )
    Speed(s): 15mph 45mph
    Police: rare - but usually at the very beginning or very end... not in the middle.

    If you have a map out you can see the actual "routes" to take w. alot of the above options. These are some of the best I could find in this area.

    Or a little farther Northeast of DFW, there is always the Talimena Trail ....
    and various routes in that area that are great.

    Speed(s) 5mph-45mph
    Police: none , Park Ranger - rare.. but that could change
    Time: All day or weekend, depending on where you want to go.
    A weekend drive would be great, leaving Dallas Sat AM, heading North on 75 staying the night in Mt Ida or Norman, etc... I could go on w. more details.
    Maybe if someone is interested ... look me up.

    It pertains only to mopeds & motorized bicycles. Sign's verbiage is stupid.

    Johnny Carson's son was killed on this road in a one vehicle accident - I believe he was taking pictures at the time, though... local he may have been...

    Anybody done a Cambria>Cayucos run on Old Creek Road?

    Thank you for that!

    On my last trip to Minneapolis I saw a similar sign who seemed to be saying "not to stop on the side" so to speak, and listed those vehicles, so that's another possibility as to what I saw.

    In British Columbia on Vancouver island the road between Port Alberni and Tofino is the twistiest highway i have ever been on.

    Funny you should say that, my trip got me as far as Port Alberni, but I didn't want to commit a whole bunch of more time for that stretch.

    From where you are there are closer roads that are incredible....

    Merrit to Spences Bridge was a new discovery for me this trip. 60k's of twisties in an airid canyon basin along the side of a mountain. Just like a video game I'm tellin' ya. But there are closer ones to you than that like Creston to Kootenay Bay...wow! I think it's rated #1 in BC.

    New Denver to Nakusp is also awesome. Want more? :)

    Wow! The only time you'll ever see a Studebaker paired with a 300SL. That's a neat Starliner. One of the coolest things I've seen, I gotta show my dad!

    Umm there's also that highway that leads to the Bat Cave here in NC. Forgot what it's called.

    BTW, any part of Kentucky highway is a definite no-no. ;)

    Also in British Columbia: Coquihalla Highway. Now it is a twisty highway, and does have some large elevation changes. But also, its nick name "highway to the sky" has significance. It rains heavy at some higher elevations. To the point that you cant see ten feet in front of you, if that happens follow the lines on the road not the person infront of you. Also, this is a toll road. Its not alot of cost, aslong as your car doesnt have alot of axles:

    A few of my favorites

    US 89 in AZ between Yarnell and Jerome (Except on the weekends)
    US 60 thru the salt river canyon between Globe, AZ and Show Low
    Dont have the hyw # but the road between Laguna Seca and Carmel Valley Rd.
    The road from Cedar Crest, NM and Sandia Crest.
    NM 152 from Hillsboro to Kingston
    NM 78 from Mule Creek to Guthrie, AZ

    I think it is time for a weekend drive ;)

    I'm going on a bike trip with a couple of friends this Wed. to the tail....then through N. Carolina to Virginia beach. Can you give a little bit more info on this hwy 28 where it goes and what to expect...
