Last night I went to look at a '67 XKE Jaguar coupe that a friend of a friend has for sale. The car has been sitting inside for years therefore is pretty solid and basically all there. But the car was converted to a Ford V8 years ago. And I don't like Ford engines. So I was thinking, no problem, just pull the Ford engine and convert to a Chevy V8. Now here's were the problems begin. From my memory of XKE Jaguar conversions, there was a "problem" with using a Chevy V8 in the early XKE Jaguars. And after doing some recent research, the problems are as follows.

The pre-1971 XKE cars, in other words, the pre-V12 cars, do not have the room for a Chevy V8 engine like the V12 cars do. The V12 cars had a different, roomier subframe up front that will clear a Chevy engine. But the pre-71 cars do not. So the bottom line is: The pre-71 XKE Jaguars can not accept a Chevy V8 conversion. A Ford engine fits because the distributor is mounted up front and will not make for firewall clearance problems. But from all the info I find, a Chevy V8 conversion will require massive hacking and slashing. Not good.

But the above info is from older sources. I've been wondering if the more modern Chevy (or Olds or Cadillac Northstar) V8s provide for any better opportunities on an early Jag swap. There have been many versions of crank triggered ignition components developed through the years that can eliminate a rear distributor from the Chevy V8 picture. And the later computer controlled engines have no distributors.

So do any of you guys have any source for early XKE Jag Chevy V8 conversion info? I really don't want to pass up this solid XKE Jag bargain coupe. ($2800). But I just can't stomach a Ford motor.

I'm a Chevy guy and HATE Fords... but because of the chassis, not because of the engines. In my opinion, the small block Ford (260-289-302) is a world-class engine and is superior in many ways to a SBC.

If for any reason you decide to back out of the opportunity, I would LOVE to buy it myself... even though the heart of a Jag is the XK engine...

    Thanks!

Unfortunately, their site says nothing about Chevy V8s into PRE-71 XKE Jaguars that never came with a V12.

Call them, they have more experience than anybody. They can tell you if you are wasting your time with the idea.

For that price, if it's not a rust-bucket, I'd buy it and put an XK drivetrain back in it. Crap "project" E-types are going for +/- $20K. Also, 1967 is the last year of the most desirable Series I covered headlight model. Last E-Type I drove was a blast. More smiles than my old '66 Corvette.

Thanks for the link, but as usual, one has to REGISTER in order to access the site. Lately, I've "drawn the line" and have decided not to waste time with more sites that require registering. I've got too many passwords to remember as it is. If they don't have their info out in the open (like F-chat), then I guess that I won't read it.
It's probably academic anyway. The friend that told me about the car and took me to see it, has now decided that HE wants to buy it. Unless he changes his mind, I pretty much wasted my time looking at the car in the first place. If HE wants to convert it to a Chevy, I will let HIM do the work scrounging up the info.

It is a pain, but there's 40,000 registered and there's little off topic discussion. As a technical reference for Jags, its unsurpassed on the 'net. The answers are definitely in there, for the other guy at least. I'm sorry to hear about the turn of events.

You could consider using a later model GM Gen III SBC (LSx) motor. It is lighter, makes more power, and best of all has no rear mount distributor.
