I have seen today a shop replace the clutch on a TR by removing only the bell housing. The transfer gears or cover were not touched. Looking at the set up it looks similar to the 308. Is it possible to get to the clutch of the 308 the same way??

Unfortunately, that can't be done on a 308. The difference is that the 308 has a 1-piece gearbox input shaft (so you have to take the ring nut off of the input shaft at the lowest transfer gear); whereas, on a TR, the gearbox input shaft is 2 separable pieces connected by a sliding splined joint arrangement. This illustration shows that extra sliding splined connection on the TR gearbox input shaft -- sort of "below" the pinion gear in the pic (of course, the TR gearbox is upside-down in this illustration).

Can I add that that's probably the ONLY thing on a TR that's easier? ;)

It looked so easy, I was tempted to tackle it myself. The clutch thought was very expensive. I believe he paid near 3k.
