Does anyone know what the black bitumen like finish is round the sides of the 328 engine bay is (the bit where the VIN plates etc are) ?

Mine's suffering from a few dings & chips & I'd like to tidy it up - any suggestions as to what would be bext to use?

I used a high-temp paint spray in cans from Autozone/Kragen. I prepped the surface clean of grease and oil then masked everything around with tape and newspapers then sprayed the area I wanted retouched. I used the semi-gloss black and it looks great. It's held up well for several months and I drive the car quite often, so it holds up well in high temp.

There is a black spray paint for outdoor charcoal grills that is a good match also.

It has a heavy grain to it, isn't perfectly black and obviously stands up to heat well.
