CNBC had a blurb on it about 30 minutes ago - said something like a "911 with a real backseat" and "10 or 12 cyl engine".

    No pictures or anything else.

i've just seen the CNN article. it sure seems real.

    http://www.cnn.com/2005/AUTOS/07/27/porsche_panamera/index.html

makes a ton of sense (more sense imo than the cayenne). no reason they can't have a Maranello equivalent as well as a Modena. they have to grow. they have to diversify. just like ferrari does.

    doody.

    1. If it looks like the sketch, they won't be able to start to keep up with the demand.

    2. I think the name "Panamera" is a stroke of genius. Brings connotations of big, important, manly, dust racing; I love it!

Rumour has it that the car will have a tuned down version of the Carrera GT;s V10.

This has got to be off. I mean America is the land of Disposable income, but they are selling off 8,000 997's a year at 80K a pop. That's not too shabby. This Panamera has got to cost at least that (figure about the same performance or faster and more doors than 997) maybe more, esp with tuned down 10 cyl. CGT engine. How in the world are they going to sell 20,000? How are they going to produce 20,000 with a 10 cyl?!? They must have variants.

This thing is going to have a ton of competition in its market and not be even close to the cheapest - yes, Porsche hit gangbusters with Cayenne, but last time I checked they had 3 versions (regular, S, Turbo) respectively priced at 43K, 62K, and 94K.

I love the idea and I think it will sell, but not 20,000 units/yr. Now if it has the performance of a Cayman and they sell it for a little more than Cayman money it will fly off the shelf.

    Just my opinion -

    Isaiah

I believe the production volumes are globally, not just the US.
So, where would the Panamera be priced? I also believe Porsche needs to improve its interiors if it wants to compete with MB, Maserati, ect.

With a V10, won't this kill the 911 from a "value" standpoint? The Cayman is a very close competitor to it, and a V10 would be a big jump. I am alittle worried about the 911. Is Porsche becoming the "New Mercedes", staying above a price level and expanding its lineup?

    Which Mr. Porsche? :D
Ferry was actually trying to release a 4-door 911, don't know exactly why he didn't.

About the V10..... Im sure there are going to be different version, the high end version will only have the V10... Im assuming they will have 2 or 3 version. V8.... V10... Most likely 2 V8 versions.

I think the executive 4 door ubersedan market, bloated though it is, offers few real choices: the 7 series with its I drive, bangelization, and other contrivances, has probably lost as many customers as it has gained; S class MB's and the other large MB variants are not only a dime a dozen, but not all that interesting to the sporting driver (yeah, i know you can buy one with 9,000 ft. lbs. of torque for those launches to the airport), the Maserati sedan, while beautiful, seems fragile and unloved in a way that only Italian cars can be; this thing from Porsche holds real promise, in my estimation, and will be pre-sold to thousands of affluent owners who think of Porsche not only as a reliable daily, but a high performance car company to boot. The image of Ferrari and its 612 will probably never ever cross the radar of the majority of its buyers.

If Porsche can sell 20,000 a year, won't that be a dime a dozen? Won't the S class more expensive then where this likely will be priced? What the name "Panamera" stand for?

As a p-car owner and past coal burning sedan owner of MB it does nothing for me or would I be encouraged to buy the thing based on what I have seen. I find it rather awkward looking in that its a stretched 997. I think they should stick with what brought them........ the Cayenne was enough !!

I don't like the back. Everything else looks pretty good, I wouldn't opt out buying as long as they change the back. To me it looks like the 928 back, which I never liked.

    Love those teaser pics..........!!

I agree with whart's sentiments here 100%............I've sold many a 911 and 928 because they had back seats for the kids.........this concept isn't that much different.

I might as well beat the peanut gallery to the punch and get this out of the way!

Typed to the sound of tiny violins playing mournful, lilting notes:

    "It's liquid-cooled! It's not a Porsche!"

"It has four doors! It's not a Porsche!"

"It has a front engine! It's not a Porsche!"

    "It doesn't have a flat 6! It's not a Porsche!"

    ad infinitum...
