I am in the process of rebuilding my DCNF carbs on a 79 308. Upon disasembling the 1st one I noticed that the chokes had 32 on the side. I was supprised as I assumed that the carbs on the 308 were 40's. I'm I looking at the right part to determine the size of the carburetor? If this is in fact a 32 DCNF what is involved in converting it to a 40. Do you need a new set of auxillary venturi also and how about the jets? This car was from Canada...would that be the reason it's a smaller size? Is converting it a bad idea?

40mm is the overall barrel size (OD of the choke); 32mm is the "choke" size (ID of the choke).

Check any 308 carb OM -- you've got the standard stuff.

You might want to look up jet sizes. I believe the 78 & 79 carbed cars were fighting hard to pass emissions and had reduced main and idle jet sizes from the early cars.

If you have gone to a less restrictive exhaust, gutted the sound insulation from the air cleaner or are just looking for as much power as you can get from the stock stuff, playing with the jets while the carbs are out is a no brainer.

I did a flowmaster muffler, a k&n air filter and needed a 140 main a 60 idle and a 200 AC to make it run right. Your mileage may differ.

There are a lot of carb adjusting threads available, birdman's and Carl's come to mind. Sorry, didn't have time to look them up, I gotta go out and get mine running ;-)

    hth,

Hey thanks guys. I was happy to hear that my carbs were standard as far as the choke size. I knew that the main, idle , and AC jets were standard and I was hoping that I was looking at the wrong part when I read 32.

Chris you read my mind about upping the jet sizes. I was going to go to 60 on the idle (have 55) and if you think 140 on the main jets are better (have125) I'll give it a shot. I did gut the air cleaner and replace the filter with K&N type. Also I think someone put test pipes on the car but I'm not sure what they look like. There are two straight pipes off the headers. BTY I have read Birdman, Carl's and several other threads on rebuild and tuning.

If you guys are still out there I have some questions. I was trying to remove the small screws that hold the throttle plates on the shaft and they don't want to come out...I was wandering if (and it looks like) they were peend at the factory? Can I use a dremel to remove the bur if they are there or is there a better way? Also do you think that the sealed bearings are necessary and where is a good place to get them? I was trying to get some from Carl but that hasn't panned out thus far. One more thing I got replacement gaskets for between the carb and intake but they are not even 1/2 the thickness. They are suppose to Weber. I wander if I shouldn't just use the old ones. Well that enough for one post so thanks again.

Throttle plate screws: I'd leave to the experts. Pierce can do it for you. If you do it, I believe you'll need to be careful on re-assembly to get them aligned right. Not a job to tackle lightly.
Flushing bearings and adding a little light grease has worked fine for me.
    Pierce has the gaskets.
