Over this weekend and next week I will open up the long talked about sister site to FerrariChat.com for pilots and flying enthusiasts. Two of my lifelong interests have been Ferrari and flying.

I need a few things from the FerrariChat.com experts...

    1) Please vote above for the main name representing the community. Other names can point to this location, but I need a single name for advertising. I like ones that have "chat" in it as similar to FerrariChat, but a simple clear understood name is the priority. The target market are flying enthusiasts, mostly private and student pilots of light aircraft. However, everyone will be accepted from model builders to professional pilots to industry reps.

    2) How will the current FerrariChat.com model fit into the pilot community? I think they are very similar, so I was thinking about the same thing with types OT forums, consultants, subscriptions, layout of forum, and sponsors.

    3) Please give advice for what the forums should be? Forums are something that I don't mind keeping the number down until the community can support more. So to start just one OT forum (no P&R! :)), main Aviation Discussion at top, Professional Pilots, Private Pilots, Student Pilots, Hobbyists, …. ?

    4) Also let me know if you are interested being involved in this community as a Consultant or Sponsor.

FerrariChat.com will never allow me to quit my day job, but this site might allow that. It would be a benefit to the FerrariChat.com community as I will then have more time. Any other feedback or comments welcome.

    Thank you,
    rob

I voted aviatorchat to keep in line with ferrarichat, lambochat (does that still exist?), etc. Any of those names seem fine though.

I think it would fit nicely just like fchat,

I too like the name pilotchat (nice and simple)

    GenD
    Pro pilots
    privt pilot
    students
    ______________
    jets
    turbo props
    props
    technical
    _____________
    rotocraft
    expiremental
    _______________
    airports
    _____________
    OT

    sounds great.

Maybe it's just me but most pilots I know (myself included)
after you pass student get your ticket and log a few hundred hours, talking flying and planes gets boring for the ones who have been there and do that, for serval years. It's like you run outta of things to talk about regarding flyind, especially if you do it for a living.
So don't expect a lot of traffic like Fchat has.

So there isn't as much talk about new models of planes, hobby stuff, mechanical? I guess I can understand that a little. Most private pilots tend to not churn their planes.

How about a tech Q&A section or should we avoid that entire issue and technical questions should go in the type of plane forum?

Should there be a props single and double engine or is one enough? Similar enough?

Reading my flying magazines it seems that Sport planes are really gaining in popularity. Section for them? Put with experimental?

    Thanks for all the feedback!

I voted AviatorChat too, but PilotChat sounds better (if it is available..I did not see it as choice)

I'm not a pilot, but I do like planes & flying. Maybe I can get into it in the future; still working on getting another land-bound flying machine....

tech won't be that busy, because unlike cars
it's illegal to replace even a srew on a plane, unless your an A&P ;)

    sport/expirmental should be one section,

and all props (twins and singles are too similar for two sections)

I like the idea though, but to show you what I was talking about I have been a pilot for 15 years now and have flown cessnas to beechjets, and have never even looked for an online fourm, but as you know I'm at Fchat everyday, it's just different, hard to explain.

I think the site for what you want to do Rob already exists........PPRN (Professional Pilots Rumor Network).

    http://www.pprune.org/

It's gonna be tough to even come close to what that site offers. No offence bud......I just think that they are the F-chat of the aviation world....and have been for years.

    All the best....!!

Why don't you just call it "FlyerChat". This way you'll have 2 F-chats.

He probably can't because of the site called "Flyertalk" which is the webs largest and best frequent flyer bulletin board.

No you didn't. It's not an option, as it is owned by a domain reseller right now.

Rob, this is going to be a LOT harder to set up than Fchat. Fchat wandered into a mostly empty niche at just the right time (not to say you didn't work hard on it, but really the only thing around then was the FerrariList). Pilot forums are a well-established area, and there's an abundance of them.

    Good luck

Thank you, I know it won't be easy. Easy part is I have all the lessons learned from FerrariChat.com. Easy part is I'm passionate about flying. Hard part is for what you mention. I think some things I learned with FC will give me some advantage although my late to market will be huge to overcome. I think the only deal breaker question (because worse case I see no reason why we couldn't have 1-2k users within a year) is like PerryJ says that pilots just don't like to chat online like Ferrari nuts.

    We'll find out!

Rob, Thank you for starting a website like Fchat for pilots! I would like nothing more than to be involved with it as well...Flying is obviously another passion of mine as well (look at my username) and I have been around the block a few times as far as flight schools and lessons go. I have also got the most rediculous collection of airline junk (timetables to safety cards and barf bags) and I spend a lot of time studying the airline industry.

So if you need another moderator over there, Please let me know!

Another forum idea would be to add some sort of "showroom" section of sorts where pilots can post pictures of their planes, in flight pictures, etc.

Could also use a military aviation section?

Just kidding, we actually have a forum already... but I think what you're doing is pretty cool, and will come in handy when I finally get some extra time to start training for my PPL.

Sounds like a good idea. I do have one small suggestion. How about a fourm set aside on Pilot chat for those that are trying to become professional pilots, mechanics, etc. I'm not talking nessarily about those that are trying to get into the airlines but, rather those that are trying to find a job in all aspects of avation but, do not know how to or just need a little help. Also a section do discuss events going on in the industry or general avation.

Best of luck on your new venture.

I assume you have looked at flightinfo.com? They do much the same thing as you are talking about, with maybe a little more emphasis on professional pilots and less on owner pilots. I don't know how many users they have, but based on the number of posts I would guess it is more than F-Chat.

    It is a crowded niche!

I think Ferrarichat works because of the Marque name. It also focuses on an object of enthusiasm. While flying is an enthusiasm, most pilots talk more about planes and equipment than piloting the craft. Why not Cessnachat or Learchat? you will get lots of other pilots, like you do in Ferrarichat. I would then have categories for aeronautics, gear, airports, jets, single engine, mulitengine, historics.

    Just my 2c.
