Car is off topic but subject is not. While shifting to 4th in my 2002 M3 I let the clutch out too soon and ground the gear. All works fine. Will the metal shavings (if any) just sink to the bottom of the case and cause no harm or should I have the fliud changed? If changing the fluid is overkill I dont want to do it as this is the first time I've done this and I put Redline in about 10,000 miles ago.

    Thanks,

    Dan

    Nothing to worry about.

If we all changed oil every time we missed a shift there would not be enough oil to go around.

The drain plug most likely has a magnet to pick up fine particals.

You can't really grind the actual gear teeth, as they are always in constant mesh, so don't worry. The syncros may have scraped a little, but nothing at all to worry about.

Change the fluid if it will make you fell better but there is a magnet in the trans to pick up any metal pieces that drop out of the gears. Just changing the fluid will not clean the magnet and the shavings will still be there. I think we have all missed a gear a time or two and it isn't the end of the world.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks. Read your other post on GTBs. Got to hold on to our good ones! They seem to be appreciating a little. Mine is going in for its major soon,
