    That is a great suggestion!

I would try for either a site focused on high tech singles, such as Cirrus or Lancair; or a site focused on very light jets such as Eclipse. A site focused on very light jets would be a slow starter but would have huge potential, I would think.

Awesome! Hopefully this new pilot site can get local pilots hooked up and I can start building some time again. Looking forward to it!

Also, F-Chatters with "wings" might want to meet up at local airports for breakfast and some members might even fly in...I'd love to see the other toys.

I think this is great and voted for Aviatorchat! I'm an enthusiastic Ferrari owner and have been a pilot for many years and an A&P mechanic for nearly 10 years. I always enjoy reading posts from people interested in the same things I am and post replies when I feel I can contribute something. I do all of the work on my planes and all on the 512TR that I'm capable of. I'm anxious to see it up and running!

I think there will be activity on the new forum as I'm a member of another chat-room involving one particular brand of vintage airplane and with just 300 or 400 members there is constant activity.

I think its a great idea

    have you seen this one?

    http://www.studentpilot.com

I think to make a site work you will have to really be on the student side becasue thats where the new interest is.

I made much progress on the community this weekend. I only need to add a little more software and do a few customizations. Should be ready to go by this weekend.

There are several communities out there, but the market is bigger than I first thought. There are several communities with 50k+ users and all tend to have their own niche. The main niches covered so far are professional pilots, student pilots, spotters, and then model specific.

Should I try to generalize or what I'm thinking is to niche with private pilots, but also have tangents for pro, military, and student. I can either go for one niche hard and unquestionably be the market leader or I can somewhat generalize with emphasis on private pilot and those that want to be private pilots. I like the later idea as we can still concentrate on our niche of private pilots as the flying community/industry is so huge, but then also allow some generalization and tangents from there.

Please review the forum areas I currently have and offer feedback...

    Thanks,
    rob

Your feedback is welcome. I've learned through FerrariChat.com the best ways to promote an online community, so I think that will be one of my competitive advantages. Even the communities with 20-80k users aren't doing many of the little techniques I know work.

However, I think with all the pilots and those interested in flying just from FerrariChat.com we'll have a great start.

My first step when I open the community is to offer free One Year Premium Subscriptions (like Rossa) to the first 500 users. Keep an eye out for the announcement as I imagine these will go fairly quick. I will initially announce the following ways...

    1) I will post to this thread.

    2) I will PM all FC users that have key words like "pilot" or "flying" in their profiles.

    3) I will announce in this months FerrariChat.com newsletter only.

    Suggestions welcome.

    Thank you,
    rob

Count me in. I haven't flown in over a year, due to work and moving around a lot, but am looking forward to getting airborne some time in the future.

    AviationChat sounds better than AviatorChat.

Way-long-ago student pilot here, permanently grounded. Microsoft flight sims are all there are to it.

I disagree with some of the previous posters. Fchat has a readymade niche for an aviation board with all the pilot Fchatters and those with the means and interest to take up flying if they chose to.

    Good going, Rob.

That is flightinfo.com. I have no idea who actually runs it, although I assume you could find out.

By "interview" they are referring to job interviews. There is a long tradition of posting on various sites what happens in airline job interviews, to be better prepared (known as "gouge" from a military term). The longtime site which did this was called "Will Fly 4 Food" but has had various URLs over the years.

The flightinfo interview boards have really become general discussion sections for each category-- majors, regionals, fractionals, corporate, etc. Some interview stuff does appear, but it's been overwhelmed by general conversation.

Great idea Rob. Bout time. I think it will do well if nothing more than to steer some of us plane-nuts from fchat and keep the red cars somewhat seperated from the prop-heads. (if that is at all possible)

Wow, sounds like an excellent idea! I voted for AviatorChat since that is close to FerrariChat, and sounds pretty good. I'm a pilot working towards becoming a professional pilot, and that sounds like a great forum, and I'm sure pilot friends of mine would be interested.

    Count me in! :)

the airport I worked at in college would have bikini wash saturdays, about once a month they would have a fly-in and let the high school girls who worked at the airport wash planes in bikinis for 10.00 a pop ;)

I don't have pilot or flying in my profile, but I'd like to be PM'd with the notice so I can make the 1st 500. While I don't make a living at flying or maintaining the plane, I've got about 3k hours, flown as far south as Panama City, as far Northwest as Kodiak Island, as far North East as Iceland, as far east as Paris, and as far South East as the Bahamas. I haven't gotten to the southern hemisphere, but will within the next 3 years.

I love flying..I fly Cessna 172s and Mooneys on my days off from work. This time of year I fly out to the Rhode Island Coast, The Hamptons, Maine, Cape Cod,,,,,the Northeast is truly an amazing place to fly. I frequent www.flightinfo.com a lot for pilot info. Its a great site!

    Rob,

Since there are so many other aviation related sites, I say go for the niche and market it to death. Be the leader with one, no more than three categories, instead of run-of-the-mill with several. i.e. DuPont Registry sub-divides it's auto class into exotic, luxury and collectible. Having said that, I agree with categorizing the site into pilot types instead of aircraft types. Good call. A competition or two will get the juices flowing as well; i.e thread or post of the month just as you've done here.

You know F-Chat's your launch pad. Abuse it and cash in. Your response is going to be fantastic.

My apologies for the delay in responding. Ironically enough, I just returned from an airshow in my hometown. It was great seeing my mom in the front seat!

Personally, I would have preferred AviationChat, since that would have indicated that the forum was directed towards all aviation enthusiasts and not just pilots. But it's there, it's good, and hopefully all aviation enthusiasts on FerrariChat will join.

I see that point, but I really just want to focus on the pilots. If demand, we can have sub-forums on any topic though.
