I recently failed a California smog check for my 1999 Ferrari F355 due to a ferrari specific code P1691. I would appreciate knowing what code 1691 represents. Thanks

Looking this up at www.obdii.com it looks like this is a coolant guage circuit fault. Do remember that my answer is based on a "general" obd P code as I do not have access to Ferrari Specific.

What is interesting is that it says Coolant "Gage" and not Coolant Sensor which determines the fuel mixture. If it is actually the gage sensor, it should do nothing to the emissions. But if your like the St. Louis, MO area any code is a fail no matter if your car is perfectly clean.

If it is the coolant "sensor" which helps in the emissions, you probably have a bad sensor and need to replace it. I would take the chance and replace it (probably check the resistance while changing temperture) before shelling out big dollars to a Dealer.
