Obviously you haven't gone for a walk in certain areas of Montreal-North, or the St. Michel district. These places are crawling with small arms.

But overall, there really isn't a strong gun culture in Montreal.

Video games certainly don't help. GTA and such are very popular and demonstrate that kind of behavior. The lack of a parents interaction to explain that behavior has consequences to such behavior is also an issue. I own the GTA games and they are a lot of fun but to an adult that understands right and wrong. A child learns by example whether it be someone he knows or something he sees. How many of us played bank robbers as kids and "help up" people as an act? We obviously realized that we weren't in a bank and that we weren't cowboys.

We all did. And it was a game played among friends, and did not go as far as idle threats to strangers.

The more I think about it, this kid's behavior is nothing more than a result of crap parenting, bad TV, and hanging around stupid (so-called) friends.

    It's a sad world.

I do agree. But more importantly, I feel these should only be played by those over the age of 25. Yes, 25, not even 21. However, there's the $7./hr. Best Buy employee. Do you really expect him to care?

How are you going expect a store employee to uphold such a rule, if the parents are right there demanding it for their children?

I had a heated discussion with a woman I work with when she stated she was buying GTA for her 9yo son. I explained the graphic details of the game expecting her to reconsider her decision, but instead she gave me a blank stare. I know she did infact buy the game for him. I think that is totally irresponsible of her as his mother.

I absolutely agree the media (movies, TV, games, song lyrics) are diluting our value systems. When you see it over and over again, it reinforces acceptance of such violent actions and behaviors.

Agreed. I carry a firearm in my vehicle (glovebox) and I would likely have put this kid in a body bag if I wasn't sure the gun was real or not. You just don't screw around like that. These kids should understand the guy you're messing with my turn out to be crazier than them.

I just bought GTA:SA, the store checked my ID twice before selling it to me.

Testshoot, how the hell did you manage to get a concealed carry permit in California? Aren't they virtually impossible to obtain?

i agree with pete. im 17 and no, i dont do any of that crazy ****, but my 10 year old brother plays the james bond and secret agent games, so he jokingly points his airsoft guns at me and shoots me, thinking its no big deal. i tell him dude if you ever do that to anyone else, your butt will be in some deep stuff but he just doesnt get it because of the games he plays and the TV he watches, its what kids are brought up seeing and becoming accustomed to. i think i just beat the curve, the only thing i ever "reenacted" was power rangers

If those kids did that here in L.A. and there was a police officer around odds are it would have gotten ugly regardless of his age. I'm assuming his toy gun didn't have any of the bright florescent muzzles or other "identifying" marks that would let an officer know it's not a real gun.

Here that'll get you arrested at best, shot at worst. Being a cop in L.A. is a tough job and they're actually better trained than most. But, they still don't take any chances.

OK, what's the deal with these "airsoft" guns? Do they shoot paintballs or what?

I can't really say the first reason, but for a while I was a diamond courier, and I have been qualifying on police ranges since I was about 10. Then the civilian marksmanship program. I also participate in www.hssinternational.com and www.tftt.com, on TFTT, "E.M." runs one of my friend's shops when he is not training people or doing security services. That shop sells paintballs and airsoft.

They can shoot paintballs, metal balls, plastic balls. Tokyo Marui makes gas powered fully auto guns that shoot hard enough to break the skin on my forearm from 10ft and leave me with blood blisters or actually draw blood directly.

Ok... Why? They're obviously not toys and they aren't going to stop an attacker. So what purpose do they serve?

    1. It seems perfectly normal to keep a gun in my car. It's legal to do so here and I've carried one that way for as long as I can remember. Nothing "Dirty Harry" about it IMO.

    2. If this "gun" was a big green plastic thing with an orange cap on the barrel, of course not. But when I was a kid, toy guns looked awfully similar to the real thing. If I were blocked in traffic with loved ones in the car who I felt were being threatened in a serious manner by some punk with a firearm, no telling. I mean that.

    3. Hey, I try!!! :)

FWIW, years ago I found myself in the unfortunate position of almost having to use a gun on someone. I'll leave the details out, but I didn't take it lightly then and I still don't.

Oh, they're definately toys, for some seriously sick focks :) (Actually great for force on force type training. As close to live ammunition you can get, and still live.)

Somebody points a 'toy' gun at me and yells 'give me your car'. If they are LUCKY I will place them under citizen's arreast immediately for felony assault, using nessecary force to restrain them untill a peace officer arrives or I bring them before a magistrate. That's assuming I can see pretty clearly that the gun is likely a TOY. If not, I'd hate to shoot a kid, but I'd hate much worse to GET SHOT by one.

"It was just a game" some of you would say. Yeah, how about I next "pretend" the "Sneak into your house at night and rape your daughter game". It was just a game though! HAHAHAH WASN'T IT FUNNY??!!

From the point at which I could so much as walk, I never would have even contemplated doing such a thing (and living to tell about it.)

About as smart as walking out into 90mph traffic in the middle of 280 to play 'stick ball'.

Yeah, you're LESS likely to be murdered in Iraq than you are in DC (per cappita)

Wake up, the world's not all roses and pink posies. Infact, there are some downright sociaopaths running around. The sooner you take responsibility for your own protection, the better off we'll all be.

About 6 months ago in a near by apartment complex there were kids playing with airsoft guns. They would shoot each other at the playground and only target each other. Gradually they escalated it into war games and would wear full camo and masks chasing each other around the apartment complex. Sometimes they were seen walking or running through the parking lots in full camo, face paint and with the softair guns in hand. Tell me that if you saw one of these kids behind your car at dusk you wouldn't react. They were eventually threatened with eviction and jail time if they continued. I was told by a local cop that apparently it is now illegal since the events of 9/11 to wear a mask in public unless it is relevant to your job or I'm assuming a holiday like Halloween. From what I hear there is also a law here in Georgia that states if someone approaches your car and appears to be intending physical harm you can attack them legally. Those kids were lucky they didn't get hurt. Seemingly harmless but not smart.

What a bunch of NRA BS. All we need is a bunch of jackasses all running around with guns amped up on god knows what. Plain and simple guns should be outlawed in the US like many other countries. I have a bunch of co-workers that so obssesed that they dont have 1 nor 2 firearms but instead dozens of them.

Sorry Ben, but carrying a concealed weapon in my car (or on my person) is not an option for me...nor shall it EVER be.

I'm not going to open up a debate, but in Canada we do have a different approach to crime and punishment.

Yeah, I never understood the need for a single person to own numerous hand and shotguns. Well, maybe shotguns. A number of folks are into collecting these things and I can possibly understand the attraction.

I own one firearm and have never needed an excuse for anything else. One's enough IMO.
