Just had my door latch replaced and the shop broke my Mirror switch taking off the door panel ( they say it was already broken.... sure it was). I removed the switch and found that it had either fallen apart when they pried it off or cracked and fell apart. It was assembled incorrectly.... but when I put it all back it looks as if some small spring loaded contacts are missing. I called T Rutlands and they have one..... HUGE BUCKS !!! It has a BMW logo on the back but no part number..... I am sure it would be less from BMW>... any clues as to what the number is...?
Thank you for any help you can provde...

Awesome.... thanks ever so much. You would not believe the quoted price from T.Rutlands. They are usually great but on the small parts YIKES!

    What incredible timing.
I just came in from the garage and fired up the computer to search F-Chat for what? You guessed, a power mirror switch for an 84 308. Same switch as pictured. I too called Rutlands and was floored by the price. Mine has been broken for some time and I have finally gotten tired of not having power mirrors.
I had that broken little bastard in my hands no more than three minutes ago.
    Amazing is this place!

    Thanks for the tip,

    John

Search the archives, the BMW p/n is there, possibly the old Fchat archives.

Don't get your hopes up tho, last I'd heard they were NLA from BMW, even the knobs were out of stock. So best bet will be a salvage yard.

BTW, Tnx to alfaguy, I have a knob & have made mold from it.

Do you guys have the mirror switch for a 328? I've been looking for one for a couple of years to no avail.

    Thanks.

Currently not available, but they are expensive - I would follow Verell's advise and see if it can be freed-off. Also make sure that the fuel door lines up with the solenoid.

    Hi gang,

I got very lucky with the power mirror switch in Rachel. The da-n thing would make the mirrors "click" but not move. Fernando @ Prestige Auto Upholstery, carefully removed it from the door, separated the switch and RESET all the loose ball contacts then reassembled and BINGO!!! If your contacts are there but just flopping around inside, you may soon be off to the races.

    Good luck,
    Hank

Thats my exact problem.. when the shop damaged the switch they lost all the little , I am guessing what was in there, balls.... I have the springs and all the other bits... but ( no pun) no balls. I have been thinking about trying to fab something to put in their place.

    Hey Rollers,

Short of directing you to balls.com, maybe out of a few old broken switches, we could get the "balls" to do the job. Once they have been set in place, its just a matter of placing one half of the assembly onto the other without jarring the whole thing out of wack - which of course, caused the whole problem in the first place~!!

    Cheers, Hank

    $195 from Rutlands?!? Wow.

I've got three switches here I've just been keeping for spares from before they were NLA. If someone needs one for $60, PM me.

This place is amazing. This thread is a great reason why. Mike C to the rescue!

Anyway, Rollers, if you need to find some balls, you can get replacement ball bearings in various sizes often at your local hardware store. If not there, at McMaster Carr. Verell is an expert at rebuilding these things. A couple weeks ago we rebuilt the column switch for my headlights after he cast a new end on it (it broke off in the column). Of course, you have to disassemble the whole thing and those stupid little balls are a pain in the neck to get back in, but it CAN be done with patience. Verell ordered a stash of all different sized balls for these things from McMaster carr and keeps them on hand. (You might say that Verell has a lot of balls.....)

Of course, the things can go flying and never be seen again, so it's good to buy some spares. One trick Verell taught me is to assemble the thing inside a large, clear plastic bag so you can put your hands inside and look through the bag to see what you are doing. When the ball goes "sproing!" the bag catches it.

Anyway, to make a long story longer, try your local hardware store, get some balls, and put the thing back together. Or do what i would do and take Mike up on his offer for $60 switch. Then loan the busted one to Verell so he can make a cast for it and save everyone's butt later!

I'm responding here to an email someone sent me... to use these in the 308's, you have to cut off the tab you see in the picture otherwise it won't fit under the arm rest. The tab was used in the BMW applications to support the connecting harness.

I've still got an extra one here if anyone needs it.

Here are pictures of the switch I just bought,I guess I have more work to do,the passenger side just clicks and the drivers side does nothing....changing from side to side does nothing and still the pass side just clicks no mater what position its in. Back and forth clicks & nothing for up and down. I hate electrical issues..
