Anyone else hate cell phones?

Yes, when they waste my time doing so. See the quote below.

Why are you outraged when two people are talking loud enough to be heard by many in a theater or during a play? As long as its two people and not involving a cell phone, it should be alright?

I find that when people are talking face to face the volume of the conversation is lower (it seems) and and the nature of the conversation is usually less intrusive to those near by.

You may be right, maybe the onesidedness of a cell conversation is what makes it irritating to others..........................sort of like sitting at a table and listening to one person whisper in the ear of another all night. Get a room..........................

 

I didn't even know they made consumer jammers. I would love to take one with me next time I'm out to lunch/dinner so that I don't have to listen to someone's conversation all day/night long. Has anyone tried one of these? On the other hand, I would hate to miss an emergency call regarding a family member or make a Dr. miss an emergency call. I guess the way around this is to let someone know where you are and they can contact the restaurant in case of an emergency.

No it is not alright. If two people want to have a conversation during a movie or a play I would be just as pissed. Comments here and there, fine but not an ongoing dialog. Usually most people go to a movie or play to WATCH, not talk.

I heard recently that cell phone use will be allowed on commercial airlines. SWELL.

These things have limited range, but will work within a restaurant; as you go up into tall buildings, their effect becomes spotty. There are also some industrial sized units, meant for permanent installation in places like hospital waiting rooms- i seriously thought about rigging one up with a extra battery in my car, and having the 'antenna' mounted on the roof- i would become a mobile 'black-hole' on the hi-way. Maybe when i buy me one of those Kenny Brown Mercury Marauders, in all black, i'll do that.

The handheld ones received some mainstream press last year, since it can be used to deactivate a cellphone trigger on a bomb- thus, some private security types would use these to sweep a room while entering, just in case...

Just because a cell phone can be used in a courteous manner and offers owners a clear advantage in an emergency situation doesn't mean we have to like them (cell phones).

Remind me to stand in your way in an aisle, cut you off, interrupt your dinner, and answer e-mails when in a one-on-one meeting. Its not the devices themselves but how they allow those with bad manners another way at expressing their lack of (manners).

I understood why you posed the question, I didn't convey my agreement very well.

 

There's no secret underlying reason.

When you are talking, you're not listening. (Edit: for the record, I've been able to talk and listen at the same time since the 1st grade, as observed by teachers and counselors).

When you are on a cell phone, its a proven fact you are distracted even more than when engaging someone in a face to face conversation because you physically attempt to do other things while engaging in conversation through a cell phone.

To some people, they feel bringing your private life into the public eye is an invasion of someone else's privacy (or simply called, tact).

I could care less if someone is talking on a cell phone. As the saying goes, its not what you are saying but how you are saying it that aggrivates people, me included.

I have one. Can't say I love it, but it comes in handy.
I don't answer often though. If I'm driving, I'm not answering (heck, it's on vibrator in the glovebox!), if I'm talking to someone in person, I don't answer, if I'm in some public place, I don't answer ... if it's important, leave a message. If I know who's calling, I see their number and call them back when I can. I just can't spend time on the phone ...

 

I'm glad they didn't have cells when I was a teen.

I feel sorry for boys age 17-24 now-a-days.. they don't have a chance against the 24 hour cell phone wired hot-babe.

No, it means not everyone is able to say exactly what makes them more sensitive to the actions of others.

Some don't know how to describe what they like/dislike in their personal interactions with others.

Cell phone use, among other things, can become a problem when its an unconscious habit.

If someone thinks another person is rude, its a feeling, no justification should be necessary. People are raised differently, many have bad experiences such as being involved in accidents, there's no one underlying reason but a great deal of them if you've given any thought to methods interactiong with others.

Trying to explain why something rubs another person the wrong way might as well be asking someone to explain the intricate reactions between women who are strangers and within minutes of conversation automatically like/dislike the other person especially when the reasons for animosity aren't valid. LOL!

Except real estate agents.....err....I mean Realtors (tm) and I dislike these pretend professionals for entirely different reasons.

 

You got it all wrong. They are a person like everyone else and easier game than those who are surrounded by her friends. Odds are she's on the phone because she has no company, is expecting company, or she is used to being ignored. Having that phone on is a defense mechanism. If you're hunting alone, these women are impala at outskirts of the pack... LOL!

 

Actually, their egos are fragile, and they define their self worths by their social connections and social "importantness".

The worst thing in their minds would be to be thought friendless and not in the center of the social scene, therefore the ubiquitous cell phone.

You're right, they are quit vulnerable because of their low self-esteem/ self-worth, lack of strong identity.

Of course, I mean that in only the nicest of ways.

 

I like my cell phone. Its mostly for emergancies (according to my parents) but I use it for personal calls, text messaging, etc etc. Its usefull I guess.

I turn it off when ever im at a movie, or some show or what ever. Nothing erks me more than some dickwad half way through a movie, cell phone rings and he talks and talks on it while im trying to watch the movie.

 

The device is intrusive, and people seem to be tethered to it and jump at its beck and call. They use it while ignoring and excluding present company and surroundings for an invisible person who seems to take precedence. Not all cell phone users are like this, of course, but there are legions of the annoying, oblivious, morons, wrecking your movie, meal, drive home, shopping, movie rental, standing in line at the post office, whatever.

Here's a strategy that seems to work:
If someone is blabbing away (too loudly for you), just take out your cell phone (real or fake) and drown them out with your fake conversation. If your cell phone rings during the conversation, all the better. Usually they get the hint within 10 seconds and sign off. After which, to drive the point home, you say this while the other person is still within earshot: "I really should go--it's inappropriate to use a cell phone here. I will call you back."

A cell phone (real or fake) is also an excellent, excellent excuse provider when you are cornered by chatty, boring people. "Excuse me, this is my hamster's therapist, and I really do have to speak with him--he's calling from Peru" is a surefire way to kill present and future conversation attempts. So what if the phone didn't ring--hey, it might even help to drive the point home.

Technology is just a tool. How you use it is up to you. If you don't use a cell phone at all, you are only shortchanging yourself. If you don't run late, don't need to make efficient use of your time, don't forget anything, only drive cars that never break down, have loved ones who never need to get in touch right away, and if you always have the information you need on you, you certainly don't need one. If you do need the convenience, just be sensitive to company and surroundings. How about leaving it on vibrate all the time?

They really should have public service announcements about cell phone etiquette.

 

What I dislike is the pissed off soccer mom in her Ford Excursion not paying attention too the road...
