You know MarkPDX, I don't know anything about supercars. My prior car was a Jeep Cherokee. I go into a lot of worlds being totally ignorant, like computer programming, spear-fishing, yachting, photography, 4-wheeling and ask a lot of questions. At some time however, we are all new to a body of knowledge and don't know much.

When someone with authority, a "Moderator," answers your question, you tend to believe it, especially when it is stated so factually as you did in your first post.

So, I came here to this community hoping to find a supportive helpful group. What I found was ridicule, embarassment and potential disaster sponsored primarily by you. I hope you had your fun at my expense.

I want to thank all the people that answered my question and worried about my welfare. It is your attitude and concern that makes the world a better place, and in my opinion, should be what this group is all about.

Keep an open mind about the board and you will find quite a bit of help and support. I didn't know a whole lot about Ferraris when I joined a couple years ago and have learned a great deal. A key part of that is taking a relaxed look at things and not being too serious. I haven't seen a whole lot of people here getting upset about rotors rusting but for some reason a lot of guys on the Vette forum tend to get upset about it. Most people paint them if it really bothers them.... I personally don't see what the big deal is, the rotor is just another a disposable part and is easily replaced when it is worn out.

I'm sorry that you did not appreciate my joking, it would probably be best if you regarded all my posts with a very critical eye to avoid any possible danger to yourself. It looks like you are in Houston, if you are ever in the San Antonio area please look me up. I would be happy to show you the Monster Maranello ;)

But you don't correct me as to what they are made of...? How about iron, my bad. Still a ferrous metal, still rusts.

    Your Jeep's rotors rusted too.

Metal rusts when wet. Not knowing that is truly beyond ignorant. My 4yo daughter knows brakes rust, and that you don't put OIL on a friction surface. At least you are haughty about it.

Mark is a great guy, you could learn a lot from him and this board.

I just finished washing the 355 and using Mark's formula for non-rust rotors I've decided to take the car out for a spin just as soon as I finish the bottle of Tequila and the pot I'm smoking.

    Thanks Mark!

I'm sorry but I have seen many stupid posts on this site and this is close to taking the cake.

How to you keep them from rusting ... by driving the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Discs (yep the bits that the pads do not touch) will not rust if they go through their proper heat cycles.

And even if they do, it does absolutely no harm.

Guys I know many of you are really rich people, or maybe people that have just made it to a Ferrari purchase, but for Gods sake it is a car!! Lets stop having heart attacks when it start behaving like a normal car, or has a speck of dust on it.

Every day I get further and further away from wanting my own Ferrari ... I just don't think I want to be part of the image.

EDIT: My hats off to the rest of you for treating this post with absolutely superb responses ... ;). Thank God, maybe I'll still dream about my own Ferrari after all!

    Pete's
ps: I guess we could start cleaning the inside of the exhaust pipes next week, heck what about the dirt inside the aerial tube ... gee whiz those chassis members probably have 4 day old air in them!!!! ... better vacuum that out!

I bet Ferrari service shops piss themselves laughing when most customers leave ... Oh how I would love to hear some of the comments in the smoko room.

So, what you are saying is that there are sided bulbs? Left hand bulbs for left hand housings and so on?

What would happen if I put a righty in a lefty? Would I have to move the stalk in the opposite direction of the turn to illuminate the correct side?

What if I put brake lights in the front housings?

On a side note, I had my car's finish clear-coated.

    Now I can't find the F'in car!

There's the solution ... clear-coat the discs. Ofcourse you are never going to drive it anyway!

Edwin, sorry that you were embarassed. If it helps, think of it as your Fchat hazing.

I hope that you have now realized that the good advice - and there is a whole lot of it here - is interspersed with a whole lots of fun. Its one of the things that make Tifosi special.

That being said, I am going to the bathroom now - as I think that I may have laughed so hard at this thread that I think I may have pee'd myself.

All kidding aside, I have found that with the rotor properly cleaned,
that paint will adhere the the rotor.
I have used high temp aluminum paint to coat the areas of the cooling vents and cross drilled areas of the rotors.
Then sand down any over-spray on the rotor surface.
This will keep the outer edge, vents, and drilled areas free from rust.
Rust on the surface area of the rotors will clean up after a drive.

    Good Luck!

Everyone goes through a hazing period on FChat and this is just the funniest one I have ever seen.

Edwin, you would be amazed at the wealth of knowledge that is available here. The first thing you learned here is that Ferrari owners have a sense of humor and they don't care about a little rust on the rotors.

    Edwin:

Mark is a pretty good guy, and when he saw your post, probably couldn't resist. He's taken the time to provide his thoughts, and hopefully, you weren't too damaged, by the humor of the various comments.

Having said that, you'll note that this site is devoted to those that have Ferraris, that like Ferraris, and some of us even work on them, even though we could well afford to have them taken care of.

The car isn't all image, it actually does stuff too. Goes quickly, handles great, and provides a lot of entertainment on track days. There are generally two types of owners: posers and enthusiasts. If you want to become one of the latter group, start taking an active interest in your car, read some of the material on the site, and when you've done all of that, you will fine yourself with a little more knowledge, and a lot more fun.

The post was funny though, had me in stiches.

Well it only took 46 responses to get to "seriously, now," proving that with the right hip waders you'll eventually get the answer to what you've asked.

I do feel a Monty Python script in here somewhere, though, with an auto parts store guy in place of the pet shop owner in the 'dead parrot' routine.
