i am pondering converting my old points to a crane xri setup. i am currently running stock setup with the retard points disabled thru MSDs.it runs ok but could be better. my question to all of you, is the factory settings still ok after the conversion? or how much is it off by? I added 10 deg to run the advance points .will that also stay the same?

Yes, your understanding is OK. In an "R1 only" system, you would target ~7 deg BTDC at 1K RPM idle so, that with your S159B advance mechanisms, the total advance at 5K RPM is still 34~35 deg BTDC (regardless of what electronics/gizmos are providing the current to induce the HV spark out of the coil secondary).

Are you quasi-sure your advance mechanisms are healthy? Are you already running a slightly hotter NGK fouling-resistant spark plug? What's your present approx. spark plug replacement interval?

I put the crane ignition on my '78 308 and set up both pickups in the rear dist. This way I get the spark trigger and advance from just the rear dist. The front one only has to point to the plug to be fired. This setup is very reliable. The pickup for the rear bank triggers at 0 90 180 and 270 deg. The front pickup at 45 135 225 and 315 deg. Wade in service at Ferrari of Atlanta set it up on a dist. machine. If you contact him tell him Larry Fletcher sent you.

My plugs always look great due to the MSDs but i usually change them once a year just as a habit. i run champ rn9yc. as a reply to the second post i think i would rather run two dist system so as to be able to set the points up as a fallback. i have no problem setting timing w/ two dizzies so if there is no performance advantage i will leave the two. i am thinking about purchasing two good stock dizzies to setup w/ optical triggers so as to develop a good running system. i was hoping that some othger f-chatters have already tried and had advice.
