    LOL! Ditto THAT!

One of my cars, when brand new in 1977, had a "list' of problematic items......reads pretty standard..

    Slow wipers
    Engine lid rattling
    clock not working......

Then the engine blew up, at 6,000 miles......replaced under warranty.

    See how that works???

Thanks for the tip! I'm in the beginning stages of my search for a 308GTB. I'm an early-911 Porsche fanatic and am trying to absorb as much knowledge as possible right now on Ferrari. I saw this one and the description alone was enough to scare me off. Well, that and the lack of carbs!

It differs in the fact that a fellow F-chatter is giving you a heads up on a vehicle that you DONT want to purchase. I did not go into the details, as the list is much greater than that of slow windows or windshield wipers. I would have appreciated someone being up front with the car when I purchased it. Since I did not have that privelege I thought I would extend that to a potential buyer as seen in the last reply. I think a decent 308 you can obviously expect a few things here and there. I am suggesting that this one is a wolf in sheeps clothing and wanted to advise as such. I was a novice in purchasing this one and put a couple grand into it. It ended up at the shop more than I drove it. As I did purchase a 355 via a suggestion from an Fchatter, I am passing on the same.

Take your time Curt, spend time researching, look at as many as you can, spend time on fchat, etc. Thats what I did, took me about a year; but I finally found one that was right: an original owner, purchased new in Italy, 1985 Euro 308.

The car looks nice in the pictures and IS a deal at the right price. Question is: what's so wrong about it? If the engine is good it's worth $20k regardless; if it needs a rebuild but the body is in good shape it's still a deal at a price to the right person. I mean, as a parts car it's worth $10-12k and it looks better than that.

I am not nor have ever been a mechanic. So to summarize in laymans understanding. When I purchased the car yes it did and does look fantastic as the interior was redone and exterior resprayed in 2000. One day I went to take it out and it did not start. Well 6 months later the first shop I took it to still had no clue but was sure that both ecu's were bad. I then found F-chat. Someone gave me a name to call and he reccomended a local shop I had no idea was even here. I had the car towed that day. One month later they found many things that needed repair but the not starting issue was a ground somewhere in the back bumper that had corroded off. Once fixed I had the car back but my NEW mechanic advised me to enjoy it for about a year then plan on getting rid of it... Sure it had the usual slow windows but they worked, the windshield wipers we almost adequate. The A/C was actually fantastic. SO for a month or so I did enjoy the vehicle. Since initial ownership I did notice that unless the vehicle was at a complete stop I could not put it into first gear? Even a rolling stop would have to be in second. Again, not a sign of good things to come. As I got closer to the one year point the key began getting harder to turn, just the actual mechanism on the dash, so yep got that rebuilt, started to smoke a little on startup and oil started to show up on the garage floor. As I then decided to shop for a 355, I guess the ole 308 got word she was on the way out apparently the spedo decided to quit, shifting got a little rougher and she decided to take up smoking on a more permanent basis. So as to my original statement, sure theres some little stuff but I think the big one is on its way. If you have the talent or ability it may not be a big deal to you to fix something like this. I can assure you I have not seen a cleaner LOOKING 308 yet! If you are the type that calls AAA first when your car breaks down then I would pass on this sexy 308. If you own a shop or are a proficient mechanic then at a steal you may want this car. My mechanics advice from the beginning was not to keep this one, it would cost me more in repairs than I spent on the vehicle. I was looking for a fun weekender and ended up with partial custody and visitation rights while at the shop....

"Take your time Curt, spend time researching, look at as many as you can, spend time on fchat, etc. "

That's my plan. One thing I've learned is DOCMENTATION is everything. I purchased my current '71 911 from the original owner about 5 years ago. Every piece of documentation (including his original loan application!) was included - a complete history of every problem, every repair and every modification. That's what I'm looking for in a 308 as well. I learn something new from you guys everytime I browse thru this forum - thanks! My future 308 will be a stablemate to this:
