got a new silver knob. how do you take off the old one. The instructions somethink like to use a 17mm spanner to turn the lock nut. I don't understand this.

on the front part of the know there is an opening and there appears to be some kind of nut or something. I tried a 2.5 mm allen wrench. but it wouldnt turn. I don't see how putting a big 17mm wrench on ... what exactly? gets it off. do I just twist the ball part counter clockwise? won't do that until I get some instruction from the site for fear of breaking the knob. thanks.

also got a dead pedal and pedal set. on my car, the dead pedal is just black rubber or plastic. is it best to remove it? or just put the dead pedal over the black one. If I remove it, it looks like part of he black underframe (90 degree from the front of the pedal) will be exposed.)

    paul, any thoughts?

Maybe you don't have a stock/factory original knob on there now. It wouldn't have an allen screw opening. If you have an allen screw, you need to back it off or you might wreck the threads on the shifter shaft. The factory knob threads on the shaft directly, with the 17mm nut to allow you to fix its position so that the engraved gear shift pattern is straight.

    Rick,

On the bottom of my shift knob, there is a nut that you unscrew to loosen the shift knob. Once that nut is loosened, you can remove the shift knob.

For the dead pedal, I did remove the rubber underneath. Note: I noticed that the dead pedal for the 308 GTB/S cars is different from the GT4 deadpedal. I purchased mine from Ultimate pedals, and he custom made a dead pedal for me.

Here is a link to a thread which contains a photo/description of my setup:

    Hope this helps.

Rickjaffe, as suggested above, sounds like you have a non-standard knob mounted there. Possibly a Momo or similar knob that fixes to the shaft via small allen headed bolts rathe than threadin down the shaft thread with the 17mm lock nut. If you can get the old knob off you will find that the factory knob will thread on the shaft thread just fine - be sure to thread the lock nut on first so you can tighten this up against the knob and thereby lock the knob in place on the shaft.

Does anyone have a spare stock locknut to sell? The one on my GT4 is long gone, and a standard 17mm nut looks stupid there. Thanks for any leads.

Check a hardware store, or industrial supply house like Grainger's.

Seems to me I got them at one of those places. Probably in the SS section.

I have what appears to be a stock nob. here is a picture of the knob with the nut or whatever it is underneath. the picuture shows an opening in the back, there's an identical one in the front.
it's rounded and I don't see how I could get a 17mm wrench around it and have torque. what kind of fitting is it?

It looks like a funky nut that has two slots to grip it instead of the usual hex pattern. I would imagine that the knob can be simply unscrewed. The nut is just tightened against the knob to hold it in the right orientation. You ought to be able to unscrew the knob, then the nut will unscrew easily as well and you cna replace it with a normal nut, which is just a thin 17mm nut.

Where is this allen bolt you were talking about??

I tried using a 2.5 allen wrench blind into the front space; it appeared to grip, but wouldn't turn. because of the angle, couldn't verify that it was an allen nut.

I guess I'll spray it with some wd 40, put a rubber strap wrench on the knob and see if it will come off.

There were two disigns of nuts securing the gear lever knob - early cars had a larger locking ring with two slots in it for removal and the later cars had a 17mm hexagonal domed nut.

If you damage your locknut the early type #103312 cost £8.25 (GBP) and the later type cost £1.10 (GBP) plus postage, but you should be able to remove without damaging

ok that's very helpful, I've got the early type; can I just unscrew the knob or do I have to do something to the nut like hold it in place when I'm unscrewing the know, or put some kind of wrench on the nut?

You can just use the tip of a large screwdriver turned sideways.

I have two-slot nut on my Dino. Never could find a spanner to fit so just grabbed it with a pair of Vise Grips adjusted to leave groves in line with slots. Clamped and unscrewed 1/8 turn. Everything came loose. Removed ball with my fingers. Looked at nut and there was hardly a scratch. I use same tool, same position, to put nut back and no one knows.

You do have to loosen nut to get ball off without ruining ball. There are all kinds of ways to replace/repair nut once it is loose. You probably will not have to.

    Go for it!

I managed to get the knob off using a rubber or nylon wrench. I had some trouble lining up the gear shift pattern. ended up making a little rubber gasket it looks terrific, especially with the red in-fill. Seems like I've picked up 5-10 horsepower. thanks to all for the advice

Where can I get some of those 5-10 horsepower nuts? I'll use them on everything.
    Can you say Enzo/GT4? :D
