Since you guys are so knowledgeable and willing to share info I have a few more Qs if I haven't out stayed my welcome.

A friend of mine wants to buy a 512. I told him to find a Ferrari BBS and do some research and question asking. Every single major decision I made on the other old cars was only after spending lots of time on those other boards. Saved me a ton of grief and increased my enjoyment of the cars.

For some reason he isn’t a web site type so he's just saying “I've always liked it and think I found a nice one to go look at”. I warned him about same things you warned me about – high cost of annual maintenance, etc.

But are there caveats specific to the 512? I've always preferred the smaller Ferraris so I know even less about 512s than I do the 3x8 cars.

As for the good points do Ferrari fans covet the 512s as much as he suggests? Are they that great to drive?

I agree they are good looking and quite rare but am not sure of their investment potential. Any opinions on that would e appreciated.

He might just like big, low volume cars, he has a Porsche 928. Not for me but for sure a great car.

You're going to need to be more specific. Does he want a 512 Boxer or a 512 TR?

512 BB's are 'big boy toys'. More than a Testarossa from what I've read from the group. If you don't throw a lot of money at them you end up with a real beater; which is what is predominently for sale: neglected beaters. I've seen guys look for over a year just to find one that isn't awful.

OTOH, it IS my favorite Ferrari for under $100k! Carb or injected. If I had the buckage, I'd be an owner.

Sorry I meant the 512 Boxer. Even us non experts are somewhat familiar with the more popular models like the TRs and 308s.

I know about the Boxer's engine and its beautiful design, really like the shape and those amber front lights.

I guess I want to know about how it drives and what to be aware of when shopping -- problem areas, unusual issues in terms of maintenance or parts availability compared to say a 308.

Also want to know its standing among you experts, it is famous like say a 959 is in the Porsche community? What's unusual about it, I believe the construction had more aluminum or something?

Finally what about long-term investment potential for 512 Boxers? I know it's not so good for the TRs because they made so many and some people think it's too 80s looking. I still like the way it looks.

Really I just want you guys to ramble about the 512 Boxer. Did a search but couldn't find what I was looking for.

    Thanks. Pete
