For those carrying their own health insurance, what are you paying?

I'm 38, NS, healthy, and am paying somewhere around $480-ish (bookeeper writes the checks each time) per quarter. $2500 deductible.

Currently with Fortis, but bounce back and forth between them and Golden Rule -- the company I'm not with always has lower rates to get me back aboard. As long as I have no health issues, I can keep making the move whenever the company I'm with gets too greedy.

Medical Savings Accounts (where you're allowed to put away pre-tax $$ for deductible coverage & insurance kicks in once you've exhausted the deductible) are becoming popular and the plans have a lower premium. Not available in all states yet, from what I gather.

I hate all insurance companies... they're almost as bad as the IRS. Don't get me started.

 

I don't know if it is the same type of thing as you guys have. I have a blue cross HMO but they recently upgraded me so I don't need referrals so that was a plus for me. It started out at $90 a month and over the past few years has gone up to about $200 a month. They have paid for all my MRI's, an outpatient surgery and a bunch of other tests after my wreck with no questions so I can't really complain about them. They also give me great prices for my prescriptions, and I buy a lof of them. I have not had anything serious to worry about but have thought about switching to something different incase I do. I've been told that once you end up staying in the hospital HMO's stop wanting to pay for things.

 

My family coverage PPO costs me over $1000 a month. Not sure of the exact number, but I think it is in the $1100 range.

 

I have a Blue Shield HMO (I think) and have the absolute cheapest plan. I'm 23 no issues, etc... and I pay $46/mo I think I have a $5000 deductible, but I've been to a doctor once in the last 5 years, so I figured what the heck.

 

I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO. 34,NS = $156.11 a month, 0 deductible WITH prior med condition. I guess I lucked out.

35 NS perhaps $2500 is the most I could pay out of pocket per year and I think I'm around $130/month.

 

Kaiser, 199 per month $25 deductible.

Same but mine is 190. I have had 3 MRI's and an outpatient knee surgery and more x-ray's then I want to remember. All without a problem.

 

For my wife and myself, she 53, me 55, what I made in salary my first year out of college.

 

I think I just barfed up a lung.


$200/mo here, 24 and no issues. It's enough to make me sick.

 

See some prices here that are making me jealous. My company uses A BC/BS plan called Blue value plus and singles are $459 and family $1204. As we really no longer offer insurance to newer workers most of our covered are older hence BC/BS considers us an "aging population" and very high rates.

 

In switzerland it costs me ~460 CHF/month (~350 USD), and a bit more for my wife.
On top of that, you have a premium (300 CHF), and you pay 100 % for your dental care.

Blue Cross / Blue Shield, I'm 34 and carry my 5 yr old son on the policy. $1500. deductible.

Other than regular check up's , we have not needed to use it yet... < knock on wood >

Your personal income taxes are just 15-20% higher per annum and you have user fees as well as monthly $90 contributions to your provincial health plans account....oh yeah....my BLUE CROSS additional coverage for the FREE health plan is another $75 a month too.....so I pay $165 a month of defined health care premiums plus much more in taxes plus user fees.

And....you can wait for years here for a small surgery.

does any insurance company sell health insurance for me if I move from state to state every 6 month or a year at a time? I pay roughly 300 bucks a month thru my agency but I am thinking of buying my own insurance just in case I take a long break in between job and I want to be covered during my break. I have a permanent address but i don't exactly live there when I am working.

 

You could check out the COBRA law, Under COBRA your employer must covered you for up to 18 months after leaving but you must pay the full price.

 

I've got BlueShield, 40+, $99 per mo. It's a $5K deductible and only for major stuff. When you think about it $5K is peanuts for something major and if you may never need to use it.

 

I'm 37 and a NS and was paying $147 a month.
I've been to the doctor 1 time in the last 8 years and that was for a check up.I'm in perfect health.I just called to see if i could lower my coverage and they wouldn't so i told them to cancel me.They came back and lowered it to $68 a month. The deductible is higher but it is still cheaper to pay out of pocket for a once a year visit.

 

Family of three, mid 30s, $960/month through my wife's employer. Basically her first two weeks pay the health insurance the the next two pay for gasoline and food.

 

There is a serious disparity here between people paying <$100 pp and others paying >$400 pp..... What is going on?
