I am planning on buying a 328gts. Is it true that the timing belt has to be replaced every 15,000 miles or 5 years?

30,000 miles is the more common conservative figure (15,000 miles would be ultra conservative).

    Hi 91tr,
What's your feeling about the "passage of time vs miles accumulated, as regards timely timing belt change time? (sometimes, I make myself :). I know, this subject has been throttled all over the park. I'm going to go out on a limb here with my "timing belt rule of thumb" (just made it up). Ready? - "TIMING BELT CHANGE?" (NOT INCLUDING RACING) - - The more I drive, the more time I got. The less I drive, the less time I got. That converts to; if 5 years have elapsed and I drove 3,000 miles total in that period, I'm thinkin' of changing it very soon. But, I'll wait a while if I've hit 15,000K in four years. These different approaches are simply because the belt's strength is affected in a different manner by mileage itself, than it is by time itself. If ya don't believe me - stay in bed for 48 hours and then get out of bed and run around the park. Bet you pull SOMETHING:)
    Cheers, Hank

I think there is some truth to "sitting" being a more stressful situation overall than more frequent rational use -- but if you're only driving 3K miles in 5 years you've lost your freakin' mind anyway ;).
My own latest strategy was to try stretching it out to maybe 40K miles and 7 years, but I had a cam seal start leaking bad enough at 32K miles and 6 years that it forced the decision for me.
The way I like to look at it is, if you're driving 15~20K miles total in 5 years (in a rational street use way), it's not ultra-critical that you get the work done before 5 years and 1 day passes, but 10 years is definitely out-of-bounds.

    91tr,

We agree!! So, there is a common sense approach to "timing belt changing time". But, when I buy my TR, I'll be asking you so many questions, you'll hate me - - hopefully not.

Cheers man, enjoy the GP tomorrow,
    Hank

Yr profile doesn't say where you are but Ferrari's recommended interval is 5 yrs or 30K miles in the US. In Europe its 2 years or aboiut 27.5K miles.

A sensible middle ground seems to be around 3 years - 5 if you want to stretch it.

Much also depends on what you do with the car - if you track it you would change them more often. If you leave the car sitting for months on end you should do likewise.

There have been a couple of big threads on this in recent weeks/months - suggest you search them out & have a read - you should find a good x-section of fact & opinion.

Go by what your manual says, but if no mention is made of time, do every 5 years regardless of mileage. My Mondial manual says 52,000 miles, with no mention of time, but I didn't let it go betond 5 years. DO NOT change every 3 years or 15,000 miles. Pure waste of money.
