Is it 'right' to point the finger at a possible FChatter?

Obviously, Mike has one and possibly two suspects in mind. He is hoping that publicizing this crime will bring forth witnesses to confirm his suspicions. We will find out if anyone saw anything once everyone who was there has returned from Monterey. Unfortunately, I think that this will remain a mystery, as most acts of vandalism of this type do. If any uninvolved party had witnessed the crime, I suspect they would have made it known at the time. Also, making a public declaration of his suspect(s) without proof could be defamatory and subject Mike to civil action if he couldn't prove his accusation. He needs to be sure before he lowers that boom. Finally, for those "Nannys" who wish to end the P&R Section because of this, why not get back to some of your more important causes like gun control and stop blaming the existence of that forum for the behavior of a few immature chatters?

This is a huge community which is accessible by means of a simple registration procedure .. .. I guess it is almost impossible to prevent a small number of weirdos sneaking in.

When I registered I first thought that the P&R section is an interesting add on, to share thoughts on important subjects with civilized and educated people from around the globe. Wrong! Unfortunately there is more than a handful of participants which is regularly displaying a rather psychotic behaviour. This is why I have been staying away from the section for some time now.

If mike550 thinks that the mean spirit that sometimes dominates P&R led to the act of vandalism, I feel it is perfectly OK to share this suspicion.

 

I find it unbelievable that a fellow Ferrari owner would do that to another owneres car, no matter what political views they have. I guess it is possible though. Maybe we should take a poll. OK, Who on this site was at Monterey? Just kidding.
I feel Mike should continue to do his own detective work and if he feels he has enough evidence to take action, then he should do so himself with the other person alone, preferably late at night with no witnesses. ANd for god's sake, don't post anything about it after.
Good luck in your quest Mike, but don't let the quest consume you, its only a car and some ****** who would do something like that is not evefn worth the time to waste on them.

 

I have followed both threads, and I am not sure why there is so much up roar.

I dont beleive anyone was ever named, so if he has a gut feeling, a spiritual revolation, whatever, and believes it was "one of us" then so be it. The only person that needs to worry is the one that did it.

I see that he was soley expressing his opinions and angst, and in that if he has the opinion that it was a "f chatter" then he can do such. And if he is wrong then he will have to deal with the fall out of his actions.

Hmmmmmm.......let's think about this and see if we can see the difference, a Ferrari on a random street in between Toyota Corollas and Honda Civics sticking out like a sore thumb OR a Maranello parked along side 2,000 other equally if not more expensive exotics.

I think we know why the 9 year old chose your car. Even a 9 year old knows a Ferrari when he sees it, just looking at the car you know its valuable, it's easy to see why it was his target.

The car at the Concorso did not stick out at all, it was among others just like it, and many other equally expensive cars as i mentioned, which further backs up my belief that his car was sought out deliberately to vandalize.

 

I think the same way. It had to be someone who had a chip on his shoulder about something. Mike has been cool and has behaved as a gentleman. I think he has a good idea but is reluctant to show his cards because he is not 100% sure. I still think it is someone one is trying to bring him down.

From an outside point of view I believe someone from this site damaged that gentlemens car. I believe he handled it very well. Better in fact than many others would.

I believe he did this site and its members a service to let you know what had occured.

Next event? I'd suggest paying someone to watch the cars. Its worth the few extra dollars and had he not brought this event to your attention, no one would know that it might be a good idea.

Sorry that such a wonderful car could be defaced yet the gentlemens attitude that he can get it fixed as good as new is refreshing and healtly.

Just my 2 cents from an outsiders point of view. Please take it with a constructive perspective.

 

I am on his side 100%. I just posed the question if it was proper to point a finger at a possible FChatter. As for me, I am undecided.

 

I'm sort of new here and Ive been following this post for two days. There have been some really lame replys and some that are right on the button. Kozmo I have to totally agree with what you've said so far, very well put. The bottom line here is the person/s involved had to have known who the vehicle belonged to and worked together. Someone mentioned that the Police should have been called, why? Other than filling out a report nothing else would happen, the report can be done over the phone. Even if they had been caught they would get off with Malicious mischief, the courts are to congested to be concerned with a car being keyed even a Ferrari. What happen to the day when you walked up introduced yourself and socked 'em them in the eye. Not to stray from the orginal post, this weekend alone while heading to the auction in Monterey. I had three *sshole in those little rice rocket cars cut me off reve their pipes and want to race, two 4x4 trucks with a bunch of *ackoffs force me into the next lane, all the while jumping up and down in their seats laughing their *ss off, one stupid looking low rider in a newer Impala, rapping his pipes giving me hard looks and following me out of the parking lot. I guess what Im trying to say is that yes even someone from FC is capable of keying someones car. Just because I drive a Ferrari doesnt mean I wont clean your clock, Hell I wont even have to be there. To end this on a good note, the smiles I got from the two little kids that got their picture taken in the front seat of my 348, was well worth it. The numerous thumbs up and waves. To the must beautiful woman I've seen in my life that parked next to me driving the Austin-Martin it was "all my pleasure", thank you. I really wasnt offended, you can call it a Testa Rossa if you like . . . Damn . . . you can call it anything you like. :0

Good idea. Who is going to head up the lynch mob when the jerk is outed for damaging the fine 550 at the show??? Keying a car like that one is only a symbol of how bad this person really is. It is like the kid that burns the neighbor's dog before graduating to mutilating people. String 'em up!

With respect, Bob, I disagree. IMO, these aren't "just" or "only" cars. Anyone's prize possession whether it be a Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Lotus, Corvette or whatever is a result of, in most cases, hard work and some risk. I personally worship my lil' 308. Yeah, it's metal and rubber just the same as a Monet is paint and canvas. I sacrifice for that little car and I look at it as a treasure.

Having said this, I do agree that some of the lynchmob type posts are out of hand. I'm simply saying let's not forget that this 550 was someone's passion, his prize possession, something he wanted to share with others at an innocent, public event. Afterall, how many normal cars do you see with chat sites, such as this, and events such as Pebble?

There are a lot of car events all over the U.S. for other "lesser" autos along with dedicated websites. Ferrari is not that "special" in this respect. That Monterey weekend has been going on for many years with and with out Ferrari. Concourso Italiano was started without Ferrari for several years. They were the last major exotic Italian Marque to join the event. It's great that all of the Italian and other manufacturers are there now. The show is so huge now it's a bit overwhelming. But then I tend to prefer smaller shows with more variety of cars of special interest.
Seeing 30-40 308s or 20 Maserati Coupes/Spiders lined up just doesn't do it for me.

Have you ever noticed how much more special and beautiful a car like the 308 looks when parked alone as compared to having 30 of them line up in a row? That kinda makes them look ordinary to me.

I've had people vandalize my cars and yeah I was very pissed and yes it has happend to me at Concorso Italiano. Is that close enough? No it wasn't a key lace job but forced parts removal with damage isn't any fun either. Like Mike I had a pretty good idea it was someone from the club but where could I go with that? I also had to have dinner and dance with these people later that night. It was a MUCH smaller event back then so things weren't quite as anonymous.

I say let it go and hope for some police activity (not likely).
It's very hard to do though. Don't do something stupid now that will end up dwarfing the key lace problem down the road.

I'm sure if I was in Mike550's position, I would be mad as hell as well. For an adult to vandalize another's property is cowardly to say the least. Regardless of how you might feel about the owner personally, keying their car is pretty chicken *****.

However, Mike550 saying that he was certain it was another Fchatter and he was certain it was because of conflicts on P&R is really a stretch IMO. Unless he had met with the individual(s) he suspects that day near his car, I actually highly doubt it was anyone on here that posts with any regularity. There were hundreds of cars, and therefore hundreds of people correct? Anyone with half a brain inclined to do this would know what a risk it was to key the car, the owner or his friends might only be a few feet away. If it was a Mike550 enemy, he would also know that he would be watched more closely than Joe Schmoe walking around looking at cars.

The more likely scenario is some jealous loser picking out the nicest car around him, presented with the momentary opportunity of nobody looking, and taking 10 seconds to run his key down the side of it.

Involving the police should have been the first action taken, not running to the computer to infer one of his P&R enemies might have done this.
