I have a Valentine One, which at the time of purchase was considered the best. With INSTANT ON now however cops have the upper hand again so I was considering a radar jammer, any experiences pro/con?

I think you'll find that active jammers are illegal everywhere and I have yet to see a report on a passive jammer that actually works. I think laser jammers are legal in some spots but I have no idea how well they work. My plan is to stick with the V-1 and have a good lawyer as a back up!

Is there any data on the effectiveness of active radar jammers and is there a source to purchase one of these?

I recognize that they are illegal in the US but might not be in other countries)

The new Road & Track (?) has an article on detectors & laser jammers. Check Aug 2005 issues of them or C&D or MT, one of them has it!

I use an Escort ZR3 Laser Jammer AKA "Shifter" and it has been VERY effective. A few weeks after I had it installed I was driving by an area where motorcycle cops hang out lasering people as they go by. There were two of them standing there, one of them had a clear line of sight to me so he sees me coming (I was in a yellow car) points the thing at me and instantly my jammer went NUTS...so I get closer, I press the release button (which allows him to see my speed). I pass his as$, look in my rear view mirror and he is showing his partner the gun wondering what went wrong...this was a scene out of a movie-- it was great!

What happens if you get pulled over and have one of the illegal systems?

Ok so I have the Valentine One already, its still #1.

Gotta get the Extreme front and rear laser system and that clear paint for the headlights and rear plate.

With the Extreme running at 92% alone, plus making the remaining 8% reduced by the 72% using that paint on the front lightbulbs and rear plate, should give me a total laser coverage of 97.76%. If that combine does not work there is always the gas pedal, I'm already doing 120mph, your standing still, you better get up to 180mph real soon because that "they'll call ahead" thing is total FICTION for speeders, they reserve that for child abduction, murders and bank robbery. The resources do not exist in most places to call ahead (most departments do not have enough officers on patrol for this and calling the next town while it could happen rarely does since you could easily exit the roadway before anyone gets in position) and the LAST thing the cops want is a wild chase that could hurt others so they usually just let it go. I know this from experience BTW.

It was interesting to me to see that the laser jammers had different rates of success (and also to note that not all police Laser units were tested).

I used a fresnel lens on my old Corvette to defeat photo radar (perhaps poorly named, as I'm thinking about the red light cameras)...but in general I moved from coupes to convertibles in order to slow down.

With a coup, the real fun comes from pushing up the speed. In a convertible, the real fun is cruising slow enough that the cute co-eds in tight tank tops still roll down their windows to chat you up.

Coup or convertible though, I'd put running from any policeman in a Ferrari pretty low on my list, as the first thing that is going to go through his/her mind will be "stolen," the second thing will be "drunk," and the 3rd thing will be "drug dealer."

None of which, I assure you, that you would want the Alabama police on your tail while thinking, much less if they have to spend the money to set up roadblocks to stop you...and certainly not if you outrun them so much that they have to call in the police aircraft (ego thing, I'd guess).

The Valentine did win, but in some categories it wasn't first. The Bell 895, for instance, beat everyone on the over the hill test. That's a very important test.

What the test didn't tell you was that the Bell 895 has software bugs. You can turn off the X Band detection if you put the Bell 895 into "City" mode, but if you then turn your unit to "Dark" display, the Bell unit starts beeping its X band chirp (with additional "sliding door" sound effects, yes, really) as you pass every pharmacy in town.

You also have to read that detector test **closely** to see that several units tested picked up Ka Band from about 9 miles away. That's pretty cool at any price.

So for 9+ mile Ka Band range and for the superior "over the hill" test, the Bell 895 wins. For $200, that's cool, too. You just have to live with some software bugs. The Bell unit did one other thing well...it reported a radar hit faster than the other units (e.g. when hit by instant on). The Passport was the detector for POP detection, however.

Valentine or Bell or Passport, you still need a laser jammer instead of laser detection (near worthless).

With the Bel or Escort detectors, their laser jammers can actually plug into the detector, so you can use the same display for both. Also works with their remote detectors.

I just put the new Blue Tooth into my 328. Totally hidden and wireless technology omits drilling. Two small Blue LEDs can be mounted on dash with no drilling, one for forward alert and one for aft alert. Also has chirp which is hidden. Also has jammer. Wireless control panel is size of pack of paper matches. Installed price: $1,300.

If you're talking about the K40 Bluetooth, that's a neat gadget, but from what I've read, it doesn't have a jammer, but is available with a laser reflection "diffuser".

You're right, it's called a defuser... emits infrared signal back to the gun at a pulse rate the gun can't understand-- deactivates ability of gun to measure speed.

The K40 defuser adds a 2 meter pulse to the end of the reflected beam so the "gun" doesn't know what it is. Radar Jammers are against the law because the FCC says you are broadcasting on a band width you don't have a license for. If you go to court after being caught with one it is the FCC you will be up against and not the local P.D.
