    Hey, had a little bit of a scare today - my own fault. I was stopped on a hill and had this guy right up behind me and didn't want to roll back on him. I've only had the car a few weeks so was a little overzealous in giving it gas. Suddenly the tach is high into the rpm's and I release the clutch and move forward - quickly. I was a little embarrassed as I made quite a bit of noise, but I thought that that was it and not a big deal. I look in my rear view mirror and there is smoke in the engine bay. It disspated quite quickly and I returned home to open things up and check for scary smells. Everything smelled and sounded fine so I took it back out for 20 minutes and nothing seemed off. Could someone tell me in constructive terms why the engine started smoking? I've been at high rpm's in 1st gear before and this did not happen. Was it because I wasn't moving? Did I irreparably damage something or hurt anything? Thanks.

    The clutch! in reverse or on a hill, can fry the clutch.
    Were you in 2nd gear?
    you should be fine just watch the inclines, maybe have your service guy check it out next time you are in.

    Do you think it was tire smoke (good)? If not maybe clutch smoke (bad). You should be able to tell the difference between smoking the tires and smoking the clutch.

    It must have been the clutch. Damn! That was stupid of me! It seemed to jump high into the rpm's almost instantly and I didn't even press the gas down too far. Is doing this once to the clutch going to fry it or should I be okay and just wait til I'm next in the shop to have it checked out? As I said, I drove it on a real windy road pretty aggresively right after doing this and everything was fine so if the clutch has been damaged I should have already noticed something right?

    Right, all you probably did was take some miles off of the clutch.

    How many miles do you figure is on the clutch?

    I have 14,500 on the car right now. The dealer didn't mention anything about a new clutch so I think it's still the original.

    It is most likely the orig clutch. I wouldnt worry to much about it if you drove it and it feels fine would have to say all thats happened is you have shorten the life of it a bit.

    I how ever would be careful on hills from now on. you want to get as many miles out of that clutch as you can.

    If you have an F1 gear box you dont want to back up hills even slight hills. The F1 program dosent full engage the clutch in reverse and is prone to buring up clutch discs.
