It was always my dream to participate in some sort of a racing event. Especially Ferrari related.
In most F1 GP's there are Ferrari Challenge races before the main event.
Now I am too freaking poor to do a whole season, not to mention can't take so much time off work. But I'd like to do just one race, just for the heck of it. Specifically, I'd like to do one in Montreal in 2006 or 2007.

What's the damage on that one? Does such practice exist? Can I get insured for the whole race week-end?

N.B. There is also Formula BMW race too. How much would it be to bribe a struggling no points team for a weeke-end seat? I am 25 next year, and am currently thinking of a crazy gift to myself (the other being an MV Agusta or a Vacheron Constantin watch).

    Thanks

    Niko

In depends on the requirments. In years past some venues were by invitiation only or required a certain number of points (prior races). I think Montreal is now open to anyone regardless of past races or points.

Figure at least 25K to rent (all inclusive except crash damage and insurance costs). Pratice at Montreal is always severely limited. I seem to recall that the teams get one 15 minute practice session and one qualifying session.

As for Formula BMW, I don't think there are any teams that rent on a per race basis. Of the two I'd do Ferrari Challenge as the teams in that series are used to dealing with rent a drivers and will offer you top noth customer service. Formula BMW teams are either looking for young hotshoes or people willing to pay for the entire season.

Thanks. 25K seems like a lot. I might just drive an F1 instead in France.

You must have previous Ferrari Challenge experience to participate in the FC race at Montreal, with very few exceptions where you can satisfactorily prove previous racing experience.

Ok, so If I rack up the miles in a Formula BMW OR do some kind of Formula 1 driving experience then I will be allowed. I was also thinking of doing the Ferrari driving courses in Fiorano? Do I have to do all of them to qualify?

Driving experiences (i.e. F1 or lapping) do not equal racing.

Star Mazda might be easier if you're looking for seat time and race experience.

OG won't talk to me for a week after this comment, but that is part of the motivation for a few Challenge drivers. However, most have had attended several racing schools and at least several test days before they do their first challenge weekend. Even with several racing schools and several days on the track you'll still suck and most likely won't even be safe. Its not something you just jump into doing. One step at a time.

    No longer here
Not a week, Rob. Two or three days at the most.

There are lots of reasons why people do/have done the Ferrari Challenge. Certainly over the years there may have been one or two who did it because they enjoyed being seen racing (perhaps as opposed to racing) before the F1 crowds at Montreal or Indy.

As long as they enjoyed it.

    OG

PS -- I absolutely do agree with your comments about what's needed prior to the first event. That probably should be a minimum.

    oh what can i say...LOL

Well, without a proper racing school you will not get the lizense to race in the first place. That requires school and racing experience in SCCA or other sanctioning bodies.

You may want to buy a seat for a track lapping day first before thinking about driving an F1 car. Gosh, I would not allow myself into one of those yet and I have plenty of track practice.

You need to do one step at a time. I would not rent you a seat for one of my 355CH cars even if you pay double.

If I may say what others have not yet said but were probably thinking:

You sound like you are too young to be let lose on a race track. You would be a statistic. A dead one. Killed by his own ego.

One other thing you might want to do is also to start small; some of the series, like spec miata will teach you better fundamentals of how to actually race than higher hp series.

You want to learn in tight and evenly matched series if you really want to learn.

I thought I heard there was a fatality in one of the Challenge Series races. Is that true?

Even track days can be very dangerous. I have read of the many track day injuries and fatalities of late. I am afraid this will make it more dificult for the average fan, such as myself, to enjoy the relaxed nature of "track day". Personally, I would not like to run flat out laps as some do with a fully stock car, no roll bar, harness, etc.

I'm sure OG will chime in (and put me on ignore for a few weeks). There has been one fatality, in the European series. The Challenge cars have a full cage as well as a fire system. The 360 Challenge is a proper race car with proper approved safety equipment.

That said, racing is (not just can be, but is) a dangerous sport.
