i suspect the amv8 sucess or failure will come down tothe actual selling price...if it can be had for under 100k new...it will be a hit...but at 120k, i am not so sure....

At $120,000, I think it would be a big hit. I believe the production volume is already sold out for a few years. I think if it was under $100,000 and overly produced, it would put the Aston Martin brand at risk of being tarnished.

Speculators. Most guys I know that have deposits down are buying to flip. When the reality sets in, this car will sell for MSRP relatively soon.

you guys don't already have the MSRP in the US for the AM V8 Vantage?

or you are imagining it be that high at $120kUSD ??

as i already mentioned in this thread:
FYI in canada the MSRP is $135k CAD including PDI.
    a 997 Carrera S is $119k CAD plus PDI

so the base of a AMV8 over a 997S is nothing (well, a sports chrono package).

the production number, according to the AM Confidential (an Aston Martin publication):

"It will almost certainly be the most popular car in Aston Martin history, responsible for more than half the planned 5,000-cars-a-year production run. Sound a lot? Not when Porsche makes 20,000-30,000 911s a year. Aston Martin will remain remain one of the world's most exclusive marques."

i think it is not a tough decision to get a V8 when they are essentially the same price and 10x times as rare.

Yup, you got me on that one!

I was under the mistaken assumption that the 997 had speed-sensitive variable ratio steering. In re-reading the specs, it appears to have just variable ratio steering (non-varying variable ratio steering, if you will).

So what causes the ratio to vary? Amount of lock?

Hell, they're using the Jag 4.2L V8 stroked out and leaned for bhp, why not go all the way?

    Its already tarnished, mate.

At $120k the AMV8 should sell like hotcakes. It's sex in a bottle man. Baby Berkshires still carry cachet.

$135k CAD is $112,410 USD. So with gas guzzler and tax, it should easily get around 120k.

There's a better write up of this battle in today's Autocar. The magazine voted the Carrera S the better car, BTW. I'll post link soon.

US base price is $110K. Fully optioned with tax brings it to around $130K. For me the V8 Vantage is well worth the premium over a 911.

40k extra for poorer performing, less reliable car....i will take the 911s....and service and repair cost will be much less in the p car....the amv8 gives you a bargin as far being a relatively inexpensive exotic....but for 120-130k, i would buy a used 360 coupe....

i thought i had read that the amv8 (which was aimed at the 911) doesn't have the claimed performance numbers to compete with the 911....??

and if it is priced at $120k, forget it. not to mention aston, loti and masers depreciate like etoys stock.

Too soon to discuss that.. I've heard the contrary. I've heard the performance will be better, and the extra Torque will aid in everyday driving.

The Porsche might be faster to 80 but I know which will be faster to 160. I'm more than passingly familiar with the V8 in question. On a roll, the Porsche will bear the no contest flag, but will bear it proudly. When that V8 spins up to 3,000rpm+, the 911 gearing advantage won't save it for very long. Trust me, don't mess with this particular V8 when its on a roll. Don't worry, 911 owners, you'll get 'em in the twisties.

    Sunny

P.S. I handed a late 90's BMW 740 in burgandy yesterday from 75 to *cough* to overcome a 2 car deficit to a 1 car lead before I shut it down in a 3rd gear WOT pull. Traffic was ahead half a mile and going 70+ so there was room to play. The look on their face when I slowly slid by was the priceless "that shouldn't have happened" look.
