guys i need your help, just realized there's a tapping sound coming from the engine, the tapping sound acutally goes with the RPM speed... it's kinda loud and can't tell where its from by just looking at the engine of my 360 coupe (I just had the 30K service done).

    any pointers on this?

A few years ago I also had a "tapping" sound eminating from the motor, but on a 355. After a very close eximination it ended up being an exhaust leak. I would of sworn it was some sort of valve/ tappet noise. Try using the old mechanic trick, a short piece of garden hose, or other tubing, to help pinpoint the source.

Take it back to the guys who did the 30k service immediately. Who knows what the problem is, but if it's going up and down with the revs, probably something that isn't going to fix itself.

thanks, this happens about 1000 miles after the 30K service.

So just off your head, what do you think it might be? Thanks!

okay guys... this is really "wierd", i just took the car for an aggressive acceleration drive (top out @ 8500PRM in every gear all the way up to 4th @ about 120mph), repeat the procedure about 3 times.

when i got back, the "tapping sound" was significantly reduced, or gone rather. (well.. you can still hear a teny-tiny bit if you really paying attention with eyes close)

    what gives? any pointers?

I have had vehicles that made the tapping sound, and ended up being a noisy fuel injector. Exhaust leaks often are louder when cold, and quiet down a little when hot, due to the expansion of the metal. See if it is loud again when it is cold. If not, see if it is coming from an injector.

I can't believe I am going to help Jimmy but.....

It sounds like the Alternator/AC belt is a little loose. When the motor gets hot, the engine expands taking up the slack.

Your option is to have FoBH jack it, remove the undertry and move the pully to take up the slack.

Ah could it be the Italian tune up to the rescue?
Carbon could of built up on the valves this could cause the valve lash to become quite large. I would think that the hydraulic lifters would take up this lash but who knows. If the lash is too big it could cause ticking. It sounds like that a bit of strong repetitive mashing on the gas peddle could of burnt of the collected carbon around the valves, returning them to their proper lash tolerance.

I'm letting the car cooling down now and will start cold later on to see if the problem still exists.

    Stay tuned...

    meanwhile. more inputs are appreciated!!

    Thanks again!

Most probably a hydraulic lifter noise (if it's not an exhaust manifold).

Ask which engine oil is used, and maybe try changing it for a thinner/thicker type.. depending on conditions.

    ^ Agree...lifter, exhaust or belt....
Either way I'd swing by the place that did the service and let them know.

That is usually what I would think of if I heard a tapping noise. Could happen when oil passages get partially blocked due to sludge or too heavy oil weight.
Also could be that the oil is too light and isn't properly coating the valvetrain.

Anyway, first thing to do is make sure your oil level is all topped off.

that's the poor soul of the engine tapping on your rear glass saying "uuuuuse me! uuuuuuuse me!" :D

heh, could be any of the above... i just had tapping coming from my poxy fiat and it turned out to be the exhaust valve seats had come loose somehow so my mind is on that....

    Jimmy,

It's the oil...either the level or a breakdown in the viscosity.

I'd change it. What are you running? The Maranello likes 5-40 the best.

"appears to be normal". In the absence of having this checked out by a trained tech (who probably won't be able to hear a noise that isn't being made anymore) have the oil changed and the oil filter cut open with s device that won't produce filings like a saw would (a pipe cutter would probably work or you can just peel the metal away once you've punctured it) Check the filter element for any traces of metal. Any shiny pieces of metal are an indication you have a problem developing. If you don't find any metal - button it up and keep driving it.

It had to be lifters Jimmy. Glad to see you did some nice good old fashioned "tuning" on the 360 and resolved the issue.

Thank you all so much for all your wisdoms.

I just got home from Ferrari Service. The problem seems to be some dirt in the lifter, by driving the $h!t of the car, it cleared itself out.... there's still a slight tapping sound though... so I plan to drive for another 300 miles and if the sound still there, I will do an oil change.

    Thanks again people.

If you learned about the "dirt in the filter clearing itself out" from your mechanic, look for another one.
