Kelly, When are you going to try to get back, I think we are going to plan on tomorrow. When I talked to Stacy she saidthey lost a few windows over at Ochsner but that was 2 hours ago
Kelly, The latest I have heard from my uncle that lives off of Gause in Lakewood on the big lake off of i-10 and Gause they said they have water in hte house but not sure the extent of it. THe roads to get back there are impassable and blocked by fallen trees and debris. Officials are not letting them in. Wade
I live on Military Road. I hear it to total. No trees left that are over 10 feet tall. I live or used to live on a beautifull acre full of oaks and Pines. I've been told by someone out of Picayune that there are no trees left in Picayune and that Slidell and Pearl River are worse. God I want to go home, Kelly
Apparently the roads are blocked into St. Tammany. I'm not sure if that means they actually have the interstate blocked or if they just have the on/offramps blocked. I'm interested to hear how the NS made out also. My friends and I actually called CNN and were on hold for about 15 minutes. They said that there was extensive flooding and wouldn't be able to have any coverage from any part of the NS for a while.
I hear you Kelly. My Mother's house backs up to the bayou off Military Rd. in Quail Ridge. We expect a total loss and need to salvage valuables that may still remain. Father has an apartment in the same vicinity. Surely gone as well. He also is renovating a propery right past Carriere, MS. Hoping, wishing, that it is somewhat intact. If I hear any news about the area I will post here. please do the same. I know some family friends who are stayed up in Lafayette now and will venture back as soon as its open, so we are awaiting their report since they live in the neighborhood...
Here is all the info I have gathered thusfar...so sorry everyone. I can't describe this, its too much........ Sections of the Interstate 10 twin bridges linking St. Tammany and Orleans parishes over Lake Pontchartrain have been severely damaged in both directions, some probably knocked out, Louisiana's highway boss said. This is a catastrophic storm, he said. People will not get back to their homes for several weeks if not longer. Theres no message going out right now, except, Dont come back, said Dana LaFonta, a spokeswoman for Parish President Kevin Davis Sheriffs spokesman James Hartman said all entrances into the parish from Interstates 10, 12 and 59 would be closed until further notice. Even if they come back, they cant stop, Hartman said. The blockages of roadways from debris is extensive and catastrophic. He emphasized that no residents are being allowed back in to St. Tammany and anyone attempting to return is being stopped by law enforcement. The visual inspections of Ross and his photographer Mike Bland showed that Slidell has probably endured massive storm surge damage. He said Lake Pontchartrain overflowed its banks and had chest-deep water from the Lake to the Old Spanish trail exit. You cant tell where the Lake ends and Slidell begins, he said. St. Tammany Parish officials plan to send boats into the area Tuesday to assess the damage and look for survivors. John, if you or anybody else need any help, pls contact me. I can find a place for you to stay in the North Houston area or someplace. But, based on my experience last year with Ivan, the one thing that you don't want to do is to go home right now. Dale
Thanks. Just learned a few minutes ago that my Mother's house is a total loss Apparently at one point there was about 20ft of water on her property. We have some friends who are physicians who live near us that were able to get in with medical passes. But, we were expecting this to be the case. Amazingly my Father's apartment just might have made it with minimal damage(2-3ft of water, since receeded). Nice considering he won't have to wrestle with the insurance people over the value of his art collection that we couldn't fit into the vehicles when leaving. Apparently it will still be a long time before us normal civilians can make it back to the area, but rebuilding will take place, and normalcy will eventually return somewhere down the road. We just are fortunate to have left as quickly as possible and to be safe and sound. John, I'll let you know if I come up to NYC in the near future. Luckily with my trading gig I am not out of work since all I need is an internet connection. Many people have it much worse, losing friends, relatives, and loved ones. These are the people who will really need the help. As for us losing some property, there are worse things in the world. That's what insurance is for! Thanks to everyone for showing concern and giving support.
Thanks, I am staying with family in Ft. Worth and am in very good hands. I might be renting an apartment in downtown Ft. Worth, but am currently in the vicinity of Hulen Mall. All the other family members that evacuated with me are also in good hands.
I realize y'all will just want to strangle me, as if to say "we know!" but, to me, it is important to prepare for the worst, hope for the best and through those acts, help break down barriers that may prevent one from enjoying the day, despite hell and/or high water. Strange as it may seem, imagining the worst makes actual results easier to deal with. Sometimes CPR works, sometimes it doesn't. But you have to learn to do it. Preparing for the worst and hoping for the best is what CPR is all about. But still, "Breathe, dammit." It's a worst-case scenario from the Natural Hazards Center entitled What if Hurricane Ivan Had Not Missed New Orleans?. Worst case or not, indications were made at the time of writing it could take 9 weeks to pump all the water out. With every second ticking slower than the last, 9 weeks is a long time. My heart goes out to you and yours. In my book, this really couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of folks.
Not to be calloused, but when one is strongly ecouraged to evacuate....then evacuate. Some said they didn;t think it would be bad, how much more proof did folks need? I understand some just did not have any money or transportation to leave, but I know that there were many that could have but didn't and had the means to do so. Its a damn shame that it took loss of life for some to realize it. Whats really bad, the hospitals are running out of fuel to run generators and those on life support are dying. Its goes from bad to worse
In Slidell, where my parents lived, the mandatory evacuation was called for a day before New Orleans was given the madatory evac. Yet hundreds in Slidell STAYED!!!! Eden Isles, a very nice community in Slidell was completely obliterated. Its the one they are showing in Slidell with all of the boats pushed into houses. It is literally situated on the water's edge of Lake Ponchartrain. And you would think that educated, well to do people, would heed the MANDATORY evacuation, but no. Many didn't listen. And apparently that community is littered with debris, and bodies here and there. I just don't understand. It's so unnecessary. You have a CATEGORY 5 hurricane, the LARGEST to potentially hit the U.S. barreling up your ass, and you don't leave. It's unreal. But its just how some people work. I don't know what causes this psychological paralysis. I just hope and pray that as many people that stayed also survived. Because despite it being their fault for staying, you can't help but to feel sorry for them. I honestly think its similiar to some brain defect that some people just have.
Why don't we do the N.O event in Vegas and get all the profits to the relief effort. I try to reach John but can't do that. we need to do something to help that region, so why not running the French Classic in Vegas with the AZ club help ?? Roland F40LM
I don't think we feel like running anywhere right now, Roland. A good suggestion though. There were just some things that BELONG in the French Quarter, and John and Franco's event was definately one of them. Maybe just skipping a year will be the best solution. I really do not know. Kelly, you let me know, if you need some help going back in, brother. Let's just say I have a lot of experience with this............
