I'm running a crane xr700 ignition with their ps-20 coils on my 78 308 and had one of their coils crap out on me(< 1 year). I was advised that it should not be mounted horizontally and that this is probably the cause of my coil failing. they said it should be mounted with the tower facing up. The original Marrelli coils were oil filled canster coils too and there was never any problems. Has anyone ever heard of this? Should I run a different coil?

    Regards,
    Paul

I have heard that some coils are not completely filled with oil and that if they are not mounted vertically, the air inside the coils will cause uneven heating and coil failure. Many coils are completely oil filled and can be mounted in any position.

If the manufacturer says to mount vertically, this is a clue.

FWIW, I changed the stock marellis to MSD Blaster coils over 17 years ago. Not one coil or ignition problems since then (other than plug changes). I mounted them in the stock location (sideways). I'll bet they will be cheaper than the ones you are running and they can be mounted in the stock position.

I've ran the blaster coils on both offshore boats and off road before, both VERY harsh environments. And never had a single failure. They are reasonably priced and super durable. May be worth switching to.

do the blasters require a ballast resistor? Also, do they fit into the factor coil holders? they look a little fatter than the other coils.

    regards,
    Paul

They do require a resistor. They come with thier own mounting brackets.I don't think they will fit the stock mounts.

I use the Accel coils in my '78. Direct swap-in - no problems in 2+ years. Runs nice and strong.

PM me with your email address and I will send you a photo of the installation in my '77 308. I used the stock mounts; nothing is incorrect except for the flaming red coils and the resistors. They require an insulator at the high voltage connection. All of this comes with the coils when you buy them. I wouldn't be surprised if you could get two of them complete for under $100.

I've been running Bosch blue coils for almost a year now, they work great, no problems.
