Yes, I agree. If one does not want to get involved with a potential valve guide repalcement issue, simply buy a 1998 or 1999 model whose assembly # is above 27689. With this problem looming over most 1995-1997 models, why not just play it safe & just buy a later model? It is better to invest the extra money that may have to be spent on a valve guide replacment into a later model 355 than to have to put that money into an older model which will then be vey difficult to sell if need be. According to a family member who works at Ferrari NA, it is not a question of "if" the valve guides will have to be replaced, but a matter of "when". His advice to me was to stay away from any 355 under assembly #27689. He said it could materialize at anytime, regardles of mileage. In a any event, everyone has their own opinion on the subject and I'd just rather play it safe than sorry. I am sure you will enjoy your 355 as they are wonderful machines and truly are one of the best sports cars ever made.
Based on my own pre-purchase research, which was conducted on this site as well as others and speaking to some knowledgeable folks who actually turn the wrenches it seems that about 5% of the cars "realize" the valve issue. So if it happens it happens and it gets fixed and we drive on. Auto Addictions- Nice GTS you will enjoy it trust me
