A few months ago I had loss of rear bank ignition (and consequentially, wild fluctuations on my tachometer (?)) that I traced down to a short, 4" wire that ran between the spark coils. Made a new wire and the problem was fixed.

The problem came back, and it may be related to the same wire getting loose, but when I tightened it on the road (by my teeth) the problem came and went sporadically. I also noticed that the rubber isulation around the "stay con" ending on another wire (the most rearward connector on the most rearward spark coil) was melted (this stay con is next to one of the staycons of the short wire).

I separated the two connectors to avoid any cross voltage, but maybe there is some high voltage leakage across these points, I don't know.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening here? Is there an OEM wire set that's easy to get? Do I have to dig down to the Marellis under the carpet? Is it a sign of deeper problems with the coils or Marellis?

I can provide a photo if you need one.

    Thanks for any input.

    I have 308 meslf ...
Alway had fluufy problems .. like yours
    is now FIXED.....
I fitted two CDI Electronic IGN systems,,,
One nfor each dizzy and coil
Circuit wise, it sits between Dizzy and coil and coil...
Not a cheap solution ..but it WORKS !!
Most ign manufacturers have a CDI system on market..
...is a MUST on all race cars !
not a question of DO YU HAVE..but ..What brand do yu have ??
You can fit ok with a points dizzy as well
Im a race engineer yu see....

Tell me more. What's the better brands? How much? Can it be hidden under the carpet in the trunk so as not to interfere with concours evaluations? Does iit increase power? Are you sure it's not my dizzies causing the problem?

Hey, is there any simple wiring diagram of the coils with acceptable voltage readings at each tit for evaluation?

Anyone out there know this stuff?

if you are talking about your '84, then any aftermarket CDI or MSD is incompatable with your current Marelli Digiplex electronic ignition. Aftermarket boxes are straightforward on cars with regular distributors (pre-80), but the Marelli electronic ignition does all that for you.
That said, there are replacement ignition sustems for the Digiplex, but it involves removing the Marelli system. This will not affect the FI as in your car they are separate systems.
LOTS of threads on this, and I removed my unreliable Marelli system for a distributor with MSD.
    hope this helps

Okay, I will start searching the threads.

But I don't want to end the discussion without also considering that it's just a bad wiring issue. Are there any threads or people who know what each wire does, what it's normal operating voltage should be, etc. So I can test each and see if they are doing their job??
