Just got a 1976 GTB and both of my doors cant be locked or opened using the key. I have 2 keys...they both seem original. One turns on the car on and the other cant open the doors or the center console compartment. The key goes in a couple of mm and the stops. What a big coincidence that I cant open all three locks. I am thinking that this might not be the right key for the car. The previous owner of 13 years told me the key has never worked? What are my options? Is there a key code I can get somewhere? Locksmith? Any help will be appreciated.

Check the warranty/service manual that came with your car. You'll find the key codes entered by the dealership in there.

If both your keys have numbers on them, then they are the original keys. The smaller key, marked "SAFE," opens the doors and center console. Check to see if it's damaged or bent. If it is, get a locksmith to help you.

Duplicate keys will not have code numbers on them. Some duplicates are poorly cut and will do just what your key is doing. A locksmith might still be able to assist you.

I had the same problem with an my old 66 Falcon. Could not find a replacement lock or key so I purchased the 51612R FINGERPRINT ID DOOR LOCK W/KEYPAD-RIGHT from smarthome. (http://www.smarthome.com/51612r.html) The Fingerprint ID Door Lock w/Keypad combines these two systems, providing easy access only to those whose unique fingerprints have been programmed and to those to whom you confide your programmed PIN, which can be changed at any time. I t looks a little bulky on my car door but it is practical.

Before you have new keys cut from the computer codes in the warranty booklet, make sure that you get Ferrari blanks, not generic ones from lockshops. There are subtle differences, enough to make the things stick/nonwork.

Ferrari itself doesn't carry some of the older blanks anymore, but see this very helpful source:

    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/index.php

For its "minor" keys, my 1989 328 has one that works in the doors and another that works in the center glovebox and the gastank flaps. I have seen other 328s that use the same key for all of these. Possibly the additional key was with "valet" intentions (?).

While obviously you want keys that work, on a normal basis it's also an idea to have a security system installed in the car, so that you can lock/unlock the doors with a transmitter. Has the additional value of keeping your car at least a little safer, and possibly giving you an insurance discount as well.

I use to make keys in my business, the number one reason why a proper looking, properly cut key did not work was shoulder wear. If the key slides in a tad too much or a tad too little from wear, you have the bumps misaligned.

Also is a single key was used all the time, and then you try to use a different key it will not work. If you put 60,000 miles on a car and ALWAYS use THUS ONE KEY, the key and lock wear on each other and eventually the original pattern of bumps do not align. The person who sold you the car may have decided to toss the worn looking key and gave you the unused ones so as to make the sale look better, BUT locks are worn and the keys you have are not.

There are a few simple locksmith tricks that MAY work. You can take a nail file and lightly sand the key's shoulder so it falls deeper into the lock. You can take the unused key and run it on a wire wheel on a bench grinder to wear the key out like the lock maybe.

The other option is have the locks and ignition removed, and rekeyed OR buy a set from a wrecked car and switch to using those.

With this key talk - I have an 87 328. Wanted extra ignition key so got a Ferrari blank. (expensive!!) No locksmith would cut it because it's steel. Got a std metal - nickel brass? - works fine. Anyone know why the steel key?

But it works the starter? Obviously the ignition has been changed then. I'm afraind you going to have to spend $25 to file a small claims lawsuit on this one, if this was not mentioned in the sale agreement you got screwed and its time to take action.

Ferrari supplied 2 keys to the original 1976 GTB buyer. If you have the original keys, they will have key codes stamped on them.

The larger key is marked "Neiman" and fits the ignition. The smalley key is marked "Torino" and fits both the door and console cpmpartment locks.

The keys should look like the keys on the bottom row.

If you do not have the original keys, they will have no key code numbers stamped on them. It's possible that your door key was poorly cut. In this case, you can have a locksmith assist you as previously suggested.

If your fortunate enough to have the warranty/service manual for your car, the key codes will be indicated on the first page, filled out by the salesperson. In this case, you can supply this information to a dealership and replacement keys can be made for you.

have you tried graphit to "lubricate" the lock. this may help you slide the key in and out.

if it wasn't for the fact that you state the key won't open the console, i would suggest that maybe the door lock mechanism was damaged by closing the door with the door locked. this bends the armature that allows the door to lock.

I'm the original owner of an 82 308 GTSi. Awhile back I bought what I thought were proper key blanks for my car from a well-known Ferrari parts vender and had them cut from the original set. The larger key for the ignition worked fine. The smaller key for the doors and gas filler door flap could not be inserted more that 1 mm! The duplicate key was properly cut and appeared identical to the original key. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the duplicate key had the side grooves that were not in identical positions compared to the original key.

Recently, I found a web site Keys4Classics.com. On their web site I found several different key blanks for my car doors. I provided them with my original key code number and they promply sent me duplicates that work fine. Perhaps your key was cut using the wrong key blank.

If you can't easily resolve your problem with a local locksmith, and assuming your key was cut from a working key, you may take a chance and order a set of the various key blanks that they sell and duplicate the cut from your current non-working key and see if one of them works.

    Good luck!
