i just bought my wife a palm treo 600. she has an old palm Vx on which there are hundreds of names etc, that she wants to transfer to the new pda. however, when i tried to install the new desktop software it only gave me the option to first delete the old desktop software before it wopuld install the new one - and thereby lose the data on the desktop.
so then, on another computer, i installed the new desktop, then tried to get the old Vx to download its data into the new desktop - but i cannot get them to speak to each other.

ok, so now i am thouroughly confused. how do i get the existing data to electonically transfer to the new pda and/or the new desktop software?

when you install the desktop software, you create the profile that is identical to what is on your phone and pda. mine for example on my old pda phone as well as my treo were both 'tim hunold' as my profile name on all the devices.

open desktop, go to 'tools' choose 'users' and make sure the names are the same So long as the data is on one of the devices, it will synch just fine.

    special tip
if you are paranoid, get a yahoo mail account and install the free intellisynch. it will upload everything to your yahoo account, and if you do loose all the local desktop data, you can recover from yahoo.

One thing to keep in mind for Palm users is that some versions of the software will rename the old profile and create a new one with the new Palm Desktop installation rather than merging the two profiles together.

I had an issue recently with a client that installed the latest 4.1.4 Desktop and it blew away their company information stored in an older install. The synchronization was NOT copying the data from the Palm to the new profile even though they shared the exact same name.

I had to uninstall the new version and revert back to the old software - all attempts to combine the old profile and merge the data into version 4.1.4 failed, even using third party backup utilities to merge or copy data from one profile to another.

So word to the wise - always backup your Palm data before attempting any update and I very highly recommend Tim's solution.
