I've got a '95 F355 that is on its 3rd alternator......and yes, I had the grounding strap put on with the second one. Well, the battery light has come on again, two years after the last alternator was put in. I have the core of the last bad unit and am thinking of getting it rebuilt. My questions are: Can any auto electric place rebuild it? It's a Nippondenso 140 amp unit.
Also, can I replace the alternator myself? I am guessing that some of the undertray panels need to be removed (as in an oil change, which I do myself). Can I then get to the alternator, and get to the lock nut and tensioner adjuster on the tension adjustment pulley? Do I need to have a belt tension gauge or is the belt tension that critical?

I don’t personally have any experience with removal and replacement of the alternator (the car is new to me) but the PO was mechanically capable and an avid DIY'er! He replaced the part and had it rebuilt at a reputable shop and did not mention any difficulty with removal/replacement. Hope this helps. If you need any further assistance I do have manuals and parts guide that may help with removal and replacement of the alternator should you need it.

Replacing the alternator is an easy job to be done at home, especialy if you already know how to remove the undertray to change your own oil. Its located on the right hand side bottom corner of the engine. So when you remove the main rear under tray as well as the rear defusers, just like you do to change the oil, its there.
All the botls can be easly got at, the main tensioner has a bolt facing down from the tensoner housing that a socket can be fitted onto. This said bolt when turned one way will lossen the alternator belt so the belt can be removed. Then when the alternator is changed, and the belt put back on to the alternator, the tensioner bolt is screwed the other way to tighten it.
Dude its a simple job, took me about 1.5-2 hours from the floor with axel stands.
MB: And yes any auto electric company can re-con an atlernator, my local one did it in a day.
