Bought mine in Feb with about 46k on the clock (inc. replacement speedo). Not fussed at all about mileage, just would have paid a little less for it with say, 75k showing. Don't get too hung up on number of owners either, some folk just need to get the "Ferrari Bug" out of their system and keep for only 6 months or a year. I've been told there are some 348's with 12 or more owners which only date from '92 or so.

Have a look on e-bay, they appear regularly. Also try putting a "Wanted" ad on the Ferrari section, I found mine that way. Plenty about this time of year, less so in winter but you'll pay £1,000-1,500 less.

£1,000 or so to service/mend little problems that arrise, £200/3,000 mile insurance if mid 30's. Still quick enough to make you grin, and sounds the "mutt's nuts".

    Good luck.

Very easy car to work on. Simple electronics and straight forwards suspension brake systems. Engine is a little more complexed due to multi carb and being a v8 IE ignition timing. Body work easy to maintain Mike Elliott @ Superformance has nearly all parts that you'll need. I maintain mine myself (I am in the motor trade though). Insurance about £200 a yr unlimited mileage 2nd car with AON. Its cost me roughly just under £500 a year to maintain in the last 10 yrs. I did rebuild it when I first bought mine , and just about completed a top end rebuild of the motor hopefully finish in next 2 weeks. Very good car and very underated good luck in your search.

As with all Ferrari's low milage seems to attract a premium. I have had my gt4 since Oct 2003. Have had no problems at all so far and have done about 5K (the clock reads 22500 ish). The only costs I have had are a cam belt service and two new rear tyres, these were £200+ each as I wanted the original Michelin XWX.

The bodywork is worth looking at carefully. I have a few rust bubbles coming through on the door pillar and will fix it as soon as I get round to it. Other areas to look out for are the front wings behind the front wheels as mud gets trapped there. The sills will also trap water and will have probably be replaced at least once already. Make sure it is Waxoiled regularly underneath, esp under the wheel arches. The bodywork is not as much of a problem as other cars of this vintage as the underneath is mainly fibreglass with a bit of aluminium plating, the bonnet and boot are also aluminium, so no rust there either.

The front windscreen seal is also prone to trapping water and will cause rust.

Oh, and the exhausts aren't cheep (£1000+) for an original mild steel one. I have been patching mine with exhaust gum for the last year and will have to get a new one soon - so check this out - water can settle in the exit pipes and rust thrugh. Alternatively you can go for a stainless replica or a Tubi. I have heard that the stainless don't sound as good as the steel ones (not sure about the Tubi though).

Drop me a pm if you want any more info (I'm on holiday all next week though)

GT4 - a great Italian GoKart-esq classic. Had one for almost 10 years.
Try to aim for a twin distributor / dry sump model, which will be slightly stronger if you're going to track-day it.
Either way, a great handling car with great sounds and agressive design. Plus room for 2 slim cuties in the rear - result !

I may of course be mistaken but I wasn't aware of a dry sump being standard spec. on any GT4. Certainly desirable and do-able as a mod. but did any come from the factory like that?

My '74 Series 1 is twin distributor but definitely wet sumped.

Had mine for 2 and a bit years now and still very satisfied. Rust! Know what you're buying - mine was very tatty (therfore cheap) and required quite extensive remedial work on the boot floor, boot firewall and front scuttle. This was balanced by having every service bill from day 1 and a sound engine. Getting the suspension sorted (for mine that meant new shocks and bushes all round) makes them drive beautifully. I don't think miles matter too much - mechanically they are very strong and they thrive on being used. Many of the problems I encountered when re-commissioning mine were the result of not enough regular use!

Look in the classifieds on Pistonheads - there is a very nice GT4 at reasonable money, considering what some of the dealers try asking...

I have owned and raced 308 GT4 (and a GTB) for the last 14 years and love them to bits --just make sure that whichever one you get is inspected by someone who knows what to look at.This is vital as many of this model in particular were seen as an entry level Ferrari. They are simple to maintain by some one who knows them and there are aftermarket parts available to provide relatively cheap alternatives to thing like the ignition system as well as a host of performance upgrades which are applicable across the whole 308 range in terms of suspension ,wheels and engine

By the way the GT4 was never produced with dry sump-only the 308 GTB came with the factory dry sump kit-the gts was wet sump like the GT4

Hope you find a good one and have as much fun as I do
