I posted this a few weeks ago on another forum .... with no replies, so I thought I'd try Tech Q&A ..... My passenger door window on my 2000, 550 started to mess up this weekend. I've noticed a little wind noise recently when it's closed, so it clearly wasn't seating correctly, but this was minimal. Then yesterday, I rolled it down all the way and for the first time it made some nasty noises when it reached the fully opened position and the glass jumped around a bit and was loose. The window continues to work Ok, and I was able to power it back to the closed position ... but it clearly has issues. Possibly a broken roller or loose track. I plan to pull the door panel and take a closer look .. but before doing so ... thought I'd ask if anyone else has experienced this issue. I have all the hardcopy service manuals with exploded views ...... but wonder if anyone has experience with this and can offer some tips .... things I should be extra careful about ... like door panel clips that tend to break unless you pull them in exactly the right manner, etc, etc. Any advise would be helpful. I've pulled many a door panel ... but never one on my 550. Thanks,
Never done any ofthe work myself, but I do know that adjustment of the window mechanism is done via SD2
I wouldn't mess with it myself. Take it to a dealer; they have plenty of clips for the door panels and they've done it before. When it comes to power windows, I think experience trumps all. (Having tried to fix a MB window regulator in an E420 a few years ago, I can say it's not worth the aggravation to try it at home) Your 550 window mechanism looks like this: Image Unavailable, Please Login
I recently spent a weekend getting my window to close properly . I can give hints and tips but the full story would mean a long email. Basically there are many adjustments , change one at a time or you will regret it! on the window regulator (the X shaped scissor mechanism in the middle) has 2 bolts - check these are tight and experiment with position, I found left hand bolt should be lowered a bit. the window close stop protection is a plate on the bottom right hand side (item 32 in the picture in the thread above), loosen the bolt and adjust to set where glass stops, maybe this is loose and hit the door bottom? the 1" glass drop on opening is set by the microswitch item 55, loosen the pivot bolt and undo the other bolt and move up a bit the glass edge runners could also be loose, but unlikely. I dont see what role the SD2 computer plays in this adjustment, everything seems mechanical to me. The computer just adds some safety features according to the workshop manual I have.
