Are you backing them up with that one, or defending Porsche?

And should you get caught out in the wet with it, and smack it into something when it chucks you off the road, they're cheap as chips to fix.

You just get down to B&Q for some nails and a couple of small size fish ponds and nail them back onto the wings. Just like Porsche did.

    :D

I like it. But then I've always liked Porsches. I think the lines look very purposefull at this size. And from the write up on PistonHeads sounds like a great drive.

Now if only I could think of a reason to buy another 2 seater sports car....hmmm....

Don't start me on the (long) list of things that Ferrari managed to do when building my 355 !!!! ranges from melting dashboards to cracking manifolds and pretty much anything in between. Pretty crappy engineering and finish.

Oh I'm not blind to the faults of Ferraris...but let's face it, faults and all, which is the better looking and sounding car (ignore track speed for the moment as there are plenty of cars to take over either if this is what you really want)?

I was more picking on the GT2 as being the equivalent in the 993 range that the 512M is in the TR line up :D

If they'd built proper wider wings, rather than tacking those things on, and put nicer wheels on it, it would have been very nice.

I've never really been a porky man. Driven plenty of them, and yes, they do everything very well. But, this is no soul or character in them. I find them very clinical.

If I wanted a daily driver and could only afford one decent car would I have one???? Probably not. However, I do think that Porsche do have a very capable car in the New Cayman.

However, as already stated by others, not quite sure what Porsche are trying to achieve by the product placement. There will be buyers, but it will be interesting to see where the 2nd user market place will be after the first year.

If it's a proper 4x4 you're after, consider something with Diff Locks and supreme strength - the Mercedes G Wagen.
    If you're after a fast 4x4, consider a G Wagen (G55 AMG) - job done.

If its a proper 4x4 your'e after then it needs to have the "land rover" badge on it somewhere. If youre after a fast and proper 4x4 then consider a supercharged RR Sport - complete package

So you have a RR sport supercharged then ? What spec is yours ? Had mine 3 months now and so far so good. No problems with build quality so far. What are the bad experiences that you are having that make you feel this way ? Maybe it is just a terrible generalisation on your part but I doubt it as you generally always use facts.

It used to belong to a good mate from Sheffield, he sold it to a fine lady down south I believe last autumn.

It was the first T350T off the production line.

Everyone gasped when the 911 went water cooled. Everyone laughed when the Cayenne came out.

But the fact is, Porsche sold more cars last year than Jaguar so they must know their market.

I don't see why adding the hard top should take sales from the Carrera- after all the Boxster is not really considered a competitor for the Carrera cabrio.

Yes, perhaps if it took more influences from the CGT it would look more exciting.

James, I really like the 993 GT2, turbo and C4S. Ive no problem at all with those puppies. Expecially the C4S in silver with a the red band at across the back - love it.

Burberry are selling shed loads more product these days than they used to also.

I guess the argument is that the Cayman/Boxster is the 2-seat entry level model of the range. But like many, I suspect the differentiation won't be enough long term and their models will cannibalise sales from each other.

As for the Cayenne - Porsche are (were) a sportscar manufacturer. One of great engineering led skill. Rightly thought of as immensely robust bits of kit that did what it said on the tin. The Cayenne may be selling like hot cakes, but it's a VW 4x4 and was built not because of the true history of the marque, but to appease beancounters.

There are many, many examples in its recent history that point strongly at the firm being too accountant led. And this will, over time, damage the brand.

Incidentally - the same is also true of Ferrari. Though I think in its case it's the Gucci loafer clad marketing types heading the charge closely followed by accountants. The passionate engineering is coming third in many of these firms.

So what, we may say. Being a pessimistic, miserable Northern bugger I have a horrible feeling that in a decade or so, there will be so little to differentiate these once special marques from offerings from the Far East, or even within their parent companies' other ranges, that the they will no longer be regarded as that special.

Sales volumes are not the be all and end all. With special clobber, the opposite is very often the case.

I think a basic Cayman would probably be a lot of fun, but if you wanted to spec it up for every day use, here's just some of the stuff you might want to add:

    - Sat Nav/Phone
    - Decent stereo/CD Changer/Sport Chrono
    - Metallic/Leather
    - Rear Wiper/Cruise Control/Garage Door Opener
    - Sports Seats/Heated Seats/Seat Backrests in Exterior Colour
    - Silver Seat Belts/Fire Extinguisher/Luggage Partition
    - Centre Console in exterior colour
    - 19" wheels
    - Auto Dim mirrors/Rain Sensor/Top Tint/Bi-Xenon
    - Adaptive Suspension

That little lot takes the £43000 base car to £67700. OK, not all required for some people, but it's easy to go wild. Just as well I'm not that keen on carbon in a car...

Patriotism is a very noble cause - although I ususally see the Landrover badge when I'm helping to pull one out from a hole - whilst in the G.
If only LR had developed some Diff Locks.
